Well it doesnt satisfy my curiosity at all. And it shows how you are prejudiced. First off utah is a state, not a religion. Your assertion is that mormons are somehow dumber and more gullible and therefore more likely to be fooled. That is as backward as the people used to think the same about the poles, jews, italians, blacks, and any other group that was different. The irony is that you typed this on MLK day.
So to start utah is 60 percent mormon. azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/11/20/20081120fewer-mormons1120-ON.html

Second Teo was born and raised in Hawaii. Not Utah. So somehow you are asserting that he has some kind of “Utah” mindset?
Third, in high school Teo had a 3.5 and was accepted to Notre Dame. He is also an Eagle Scout. Are these indicators of being a fool? No? Oh ok so just his religion then.
For the record I am the smartest person I know and I did not get accepted to Notre Dame. And I hated HATED HATED boy scouts. 😉

Objectively lets think about what some odd things religions believe.
Muslims believe in the revelation of what would be considered a child molester in today’s world. Some eastern religions believe that people can fly to the tops of trees to do kung fu… Or that we were reincarnated and could be animals. Still others believe the day you were born affects your personality, In Christianity we believe that a dead man lives. And in Catholicism we believe we eat the flesh of God himself… So lets not throw stones.

Now lets think about some other reasons Utah could have some high pyramid scams. Hmmmmm well, Utah does have the highest stay at home mom rate and most pyramid schemes target THOSE types of people
deseretnews.com/article/705334382/Utah-bucks-national-trend-against-stay-at-home-moms.html?pg=all
besides, we all know how gullible women are, I mean one married me.😛
Personally I like the idea that the “religion of Utah” has stay home with the kids. Would that more Catholics did that. Too bad it makes them more suceptable to preditors and scammers (probably Catholics, or at the very least Texans.;)) that take advantage of people.
I live in an area that is predominantly mormon. Some counties make Utah look like a liberal atheistic wasteland full of alcoholism and debauchery. I can tell you that they are not gullible, that they are shrewd businessmen, amazing moms, and the top of the class in schools.
To say that Teo is more gullible because of his faith is silly and implies that it is smarter to be a pot smoking, girl chasing, average athiestic athlete than a man of faith, any faith. Your assertion is not only offending to Mormons and Teo personally but to me as a Catholic who believes some pretty weird, gullible stuff right down to my bone. Not the least of which is my savior Jesus Christ. and his Holy Church in which we believe that saints could fly, the sun can dance and we can eat God. I guess that makes me a fool too.
This is a kid who got punked about a girl. The stupid ones are the ones who started this. Well them, and the media for making such a huge issue.
Does mormonsim believe wrong and outlandish things, YUP!
As do Muslims, Protestants, Jews, Hindus, Buhddists, Athiests, and Nancy Pelosi.
Actually come to think of it Notre Dame had the biggest scam of all pulled on it by the president of the US. So I guess Catholics are the MOST gullible silly, easily scammed and hoodwinked people on the planet.

First, it is not uncharitable to speak the truth. At least, it never used to be. And I did not stereotype anyone. I mentioned a statistic and said I am not surprised.

See, judging me is not always a good idea. And it is certainly not Catholic.

take note: “Utah has been named America’s scam capital.”

Time for you to change your faith, lest you be taken as a fool like Teo.

See, here we see that Judaism and Episcopalian. Would probably meet your criteria of business savvy.

mazel tov?

Well it doesnt satisfy my curiosity at all. And it shows how you are prejudiced.

There you go, judging again…lol

First off utah is a state, not a religion.

Yes…but a state where between 60 and 70% of the people are LDS.

Your assertion is that mormons are somehow dumber and more gullible and therefore more likely to be fooled. That is as backward as the people used to think the same about the poles, jews, italians, blacks, and any other group that was different. The irony is that you typed this on MLK day.

Wrong again. You really need to stop judging. I have simply inferred that in a state where the majority are LDS and that is “the scam capital of the world” (not my words) that it is a culture that lends itself to be deceived. Please relax and stop being so angry.

Second Teo was born and raised in Hawaii. Not Utah. So somehow you are asserting that he has some kind of “Utah” mindset?

Really? You really miss my point?

Third, in high school Teo had a 3.5 and was accepted to Notre Dame. He is also an Eagle Scout. Are these indicators of being a fool? No? Oh ok so just his religion then.
For the record I am the smartest person I know and I did not get accepted to Notre Dame. And I hated HATED HATED boy scouts. 😉

You need to meet more people 🙂

So I guess Catholics are the MOST gullible silly, easily scammed and hoodwinked people on the planet.

Perhaps. But until you can show me a place 60-70% Catholic that is considered the “scam capital of the world” I will hold fast to my opinion.

For the record I am the smartest person I know and I did not get accepted to Notre Dame.
Moore, I can’t resist.

what is your definition of “know” ?

How many persons do you know?

What is your definition of “smart”

Do you know why Notre Dame did not accept you?

:o

Moore - Not to jump in the middle of your discussion with TexanKnight…
but one has to wonder about a religion that was founded on a man who was a known treasure hunter and seer and who claims to have seen Captain Kidd sailing down the Susquehanna River - then uses names that come from the stories of Captain Kidd (Comoros and Moroni) in the Book of Mormon.

It may not mean that Mormons are dumber…but maybe they are somewhat gullible if they do not check out some of the facts about the origins of the Book of Mormon. Granted, before the internet, this was harder to do (although there have been books written about this available for some time).

Also, as I posted earlier, the Polynesians were told by the Mormons missionaries that they had a revelation that they were descendants of the Israelites…shouldn’t they questions these revelations?

I don’t know if there is a connection to be made in the case of the football player at Notre Dame, but I do question the gullibility of people who are ignoring a lot of evidence that would put their religion in a different light.

Just my :twocents:

Alot of the Polynesians I know where lied to by their church. They where told they would have citizenship upon becoming mormon and were never given it. As far as most lds people here in Utah, they are too trust worthy and fall for alot of bad things. It only makes sense that they are mormon. They believe a man and not Jesus. 🤷

Moore, I can’t resist.

what is your definition of “know” ? Not the biblical one.😃 But for the purposes of this conversation. Anyone I have had a face to face conversation with.

How many persons do you know? Just the deaf mute that brings me my food in the bell tower.

What is your definition of “smart” IQ over 120.

Do you know why Notre Dame did not accept you? I did not apply. No use, and I was not THAT good of a football player. I did however fall for a ton of scams in college. Including, Amway, payday loans, and the infamous “I’ll call you”

:o
My wife is the second smartest person I know and I tell her that all the time!😉 For the record she is neither deaf and DEFINITELY not mute! She is an accomplished scientist.

I would like to say this topic is hilarious and it would be great if catholic answers was on dead spin or espn because of it

Besides, as an open to life conservative Catholic homeschooling family the rude comments usually come toward us. So it is my guilty little pleasure when I can dish one out.

the Wife liked Venice but aside from St Matthews it was an absolute tourist attraction.

For the record I am the smartest person I know

I think the correct spelling is"Manti Te’O". Nevertheless, I spent many years living and working among the Mormons. Most are very nice people and always ready to lend a hand. Here’s what I have learned about Mormon “teachings” from close association with members of this very unique cult. I will be very glad to hear any refutation on a point-by-point basis, and not some broad, general disavowance.
  1. The LDS (Mormon) church is the true church of Jesus Christ.
  2. God lives on the planet Kolob and has several wives.
  3. God flew down from Kolob and had human sex with Mary and conceived Jesus.
  4. Jesus and Lucifer are brothers.
  5. Jesus had three wiives: Mary Magdalene, and Mary and Martha, sisters of Lazarus…
  6. Jesus had several children by his three wives.
  7. Jesus is not God, therefore “The Divine Trinity” is a false teaching.
  8. The Catholic Church is “The Great Apostasy”.
  9. The Cross is a “satanic symbol” representing the The Great Apostasy.
  10. All Protestant Churches are spin-offs of The Great Apostasy.
  11. The Bible is full of “false teachings” written by The Great Apostasy.
  12. The “Book of Mormon” is the true scripture about Jesus Christ.
  13. The President of the LDS church receives LDS laws directly from God.
  14. LDS laws are superior to man-made laws, including the U. S. Constitution.
  15. When the earth ends, Mormons will travel in space ships to Kolob to live with God.
  16. On Kolob, Mormons will receive a special blood transfusion, granting eternal life.
  17. Non-Mormons are the “Sons of Perdition”, to be cast into darkness for eternity.
Manti Te’O is a devout Mormon, strongly adhering to these teachings. Is it any wonder that he would have an imaginary lover who died?. And by the way, there are two other Mormons with football scholarships to Notre Dame.

To be honest, I think the whole tying mormonism to lying is kind of mean. Yes Mormons are not Christians, and if you research Joseph Smith you find he was kind of sketchy, but not all individual mormons are like this. That would be like saying all Catholics are Child molesters or all the horrible stereotypes that have been said about Jews.

If Manti Teo lied, its because of his personal character. It has nothing to do with him being Mormon. Same with him being too trusting. That is just his personal character. some peopel are just naive, and if he’s telling the truth, he might be one of them

For the record, my dad (a very, very Mormon dad) always told me, “don’t accept any wooden nickels”.

LDS morality allows for actions that fall under “the end justifies the means”. They are moral pragmatics.

Other than that, I worked in the LDS business world in Salt Lake City for over 25 years. Sketchy is a mild description of my experience with people in that world. From experience, not willy nilly hearsay…they are all handing out wooden nickels.

Yes, this is why I was an atheist for most of my life. once you figure out how hoodwinked and gullible you are. Just how crafty a religion can be in convincing you that complete lies are GOD’S TRUTH, you will not find it easy to trust such claims again. Or, your own ability to discern truth.

I’ve seen this with former Mormons and former Jehovah Witness. I’m not the world’s smartest or most knowledgeable, but I can’t say I’ve come across former Catholics or mainline Protestants who have expressed being hoodwinked by their former religion. So it isn’t surprising to hear that you aren’t feeling that way. Every former Mormon I know personally, IRL, struggles every day with that doubt that they might just have fallen for a nice story, a lie, again.

As my friend and I said to each other just this evening, we are like the disciples in the gospel of John, who ask, where else would we go? Certainly, we run screaming from Mormonism. Our faith is in Jesus, not any man, especially not in a lying liar named Joseph Smith. He lied. Period. If you are a devout Mormon, that is not an easy fact to deal with.

I hope you are more careful in the future in making this comparison.

Rebecca - I have seen this too. About four or five years ago we were out with our Mormon friends for dinner. Our friend, who had converted to Mormonism as a teen and was relentless in trying to convert us, stated very bluntly at dinner:

**I recently found out I’ve been lied to by my religion. That means all religion is the same. If they would lie to me, then your church is lying to you. They’re all the same.
**
He is now in a very bad way and I continue to pray for him. He is still caught up in the Mormon mindset of marriage and family and won’t let go of the idea because of his drinking he will be separated from his family forever.

I have also noticed on exmormon websites that many people are expressing anger at being deceived and appear to be accepting a more atheistic viewpoint.

There has to be something in mormonism that when people find out they have been lied to that they believe all religions lie to us. Something ive never heard or seen, anyone else seen or heard a mormon telling other mormons this? I guess us Catholics got alot of work to do in trying to help these lost souls. 😦
