Yes. I follow the Latin mass and my church requires ladies to have their heads covered. I like it and has never bothered me to follow this rule. I even wear it when I go to the regular mass or just go to a church during the week for quiet reflection. To me there is something feminine about this as well as being respectfull to Our Lord. This is something I wish would come back in “style”.

Do a search on the forum for this topic - there are TONS of discussions about this!! 😃

Yes - many of us here do cover our heads at Mass. 👍

I did not search “veil” or “headcovering” but there will be at least 100 on those keywords as well

wear what you want. what does the opinion of anyone else matter if you are convinced it is a good thing to do?

Dear friends of Christ,

MSN.com ran an article on what PE Obama plans to do to our Christian religion, today on there Home page.

It’s a MUST READ for all of us!

It’s not too early to start praying.

God bless, PJM m.c.

I don’t believe she was asking for anyone’s opinion. I am quite sure her OP was simply asking the question if anyone covered their head.

puzzleannie - you get way too sensitive about this topic, I’m still not sure why you even open these threads. :rolleyes:

I think the head covering is a very feminine and beautiful devotion, but since it was never required in all the time I’ve been Catholic, I don’t know much about it. I want to start wearing one, but first I wanted to make sure I knew all the rules- like is there a proper way to wear the veil or a certain length or color they have to be. Just curious. I’ll do a search for old threads.

There are no rules for the veil, at least in my experience. You can have one that just covers the top of the head or go longer, generally shoulder length is a good one. You can use a scarf if you like. White and black are the most popular colors but you can use any color you are comfortable with. It really boils down to personal preferance. Lace is my personal favorite, but you can also use a nice scarf. If you attend a church were women don’t wear a chapel veil, you will stand out. Though you might start a trend. If anyone asks why you are wearing one when there is no need for it, just be polite and tell them why (you like it, respect for Our Lord, etc…)

You go girl!! 👍

I personally wear a lace mantilla and it comes to my shoulders. Most of the regular daily Mass goers wear ones although during Sunday Masses I have seen it run the gamut from no headcoverings to scarves, hats, little round “doilies” on top of the head and some even wear ones past the shoulders.

If you’d like to cover, you can also wear a regular hat. That’s what I usually do. Last Sunday I wore a red beret.

I think part of the reason people my age don’t “stay” Catholic is that most of the traditions that made us stick out a bit are gone. I’m a ‘born again’ Catholic and feel weird just getting Communion on the tongue! But when I do, I must admit, there’s a bit of a jolt. But I’m wandering off-topic, so… Ta!

I couldn’t agree more! How can we hold on to our Catholic identity, when our acts of piety and traditions are constantly changing, or brought under attack.

Interesting that I wandered into this topic. I remember watching that big PBS special on WW2 and one of the pictures was all these Catholics praying during 1 of the last big battles. Young & old, they all had something on top of their heads! Mom has told me that in a pinch women would use clean paper towels rather than go into Church bare-headed in the olden days of yore 😛 . Maybe Tradition in this sense is better translated as Reverence…? Dunno.

OK, I actually need to ask something about this, so I must apologize to the OP for doing so…

Can someone explain the color meanings for Mantillas?

I have friends who wear whatever color they want, which is fine for the Novus Ordo mass, but there’s going to be a Latin mass at another Parish that we’re going to and our priest is giving us conflicting messages…

I was talking to those friends a while back and they mentioned that our priest was always trying to convince one of them to stop wearing a black mantilla since she was not a widow! My friends told me that HE told them it is:
Black = Widow
White= unmarried
off-white= married

Is that right?

Because now that same priest is saying its just
Black= married, or widowed
White= unmarried

Which is correct?
A link would be helpful, too!

Thank you!

Any ladies still wear the mantilla/veil to mass?
I do but very rarely. I am making a vow for 2009 to wear my veil in church as much as I can. Pray for me :bounce: :bounce:

After a few months of NOT wearing a veil to every Mass, etc… then you might start getting looks! ( I am one of few who wear a head covering in my church)

I will pray for you. I know it’s hard. I’ve been there. But now, I do not grace the doors of the church without a head covering of some type.

Hi Moonflower,

I did the same thing for 2008, after a friend of mine called me out for saying I would wear one if I weren’t the only one. 😊

It was hard for me at first, but I got over it. Wearing a mantilla definitely helped me with the pride thing.

I will pray for you as well.

God bless,
Becky
