I don’t want people to stare at me, I know, that shouldn’t be a thought that I worry about if I feel the Lord calling me to do this, yet, it is.
Knowing the ladies in my parish, if someone stares, it’s probably because she’s wondering where you got the mantilla.
I am one of very few Catholic women in my area who covers her head at Mass, and one of even fewer who covers in daily life (I wear a cover about 75% of the time, and always at Mass). No one has ever been anything but supportive, though. When asked, I tell folks that I get a lot out of it as a devotion and I feel led to do it, which sounds like it would work for you. In other words, don’t worry about what people think–it’s really not as big an issue as you might make it out to be.
Jag, I don’t (usually) pray unless I’m covering my head, which is why I wear a cover all the time. I don’t really make a judgement as to should or should not, but that’s how I feel led to do it.
Kolbelover, I love your statement about loving your sisters as God intended. It reminds me of what a Muslim woman said once about veiling: “If you’re going to admire me, admire me for my mind and my faith and leave my body out of it. If I’m not married to you, then my physical appearance has no place in our interaction.” Sing it, sister! When I started wearing a headcover, I thought of it as an act of “symbolic modesty,” a reminder of my personal boundaries, and a major statement that I was not there to be sexually useful to anyone else. A headcovering asserts my dignity as a woman who belongs to God. In fact, my MIL and I sometimes refer to my headcovering as a “tiara,” since it makes me feel like a princess (y’know, daughter of the King…)
For the bridesmaids and in other situations where you feel moved to cover but want to keep it as subtle as possible, I suggest a cover like
these made in lace or a sheer fabric the same color as your hair. I have job interviews coming up and that’s what I’ll be doing for those, and God willing, at the office.
Have fun, and welcome to the covered-melon club
