Many Anglicans Will Become Catholic This Easter

Personal ordinariate will bring nearly 1,000 people into the Church.

LONDON (CNS) — The first personal ordinariate created for former Anglicans who decided to enter the Catholic Church will reach almost 1,000 by the end of the Easter vigil.

The count of people entering the personal ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham includes more than 60 former Anglican clergy.

The personal ordinariate was established under Pope Benedict XVI’s November 2009 apostolic constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus. It allows the group reception of former Anglicans into the Catholic Church while allowing them to retain much of their distinctive patrimony, including married priests, as well as their liturgical practices.

Msgr. Keith Newton, who heads the ordinariate, told Catholic News Service that although he was incardinated into the structure after it was established by Vatican decree Jan. 15, it was only during Holy Week that he felt it was coming alive.

“This is the start of it. The lay faithful moving into the Catholic Church is really the start of the ordinariate. Until now, there have been only about a dozen members, but now it is growing to between 900 and a thousand,” he said.

“It is not an enormous number of people in Catholic terms, or even for the Church of England, but it is quite significant that such a number of people are making this step together,” Msgr. Newton added.

This is just the beginning for the Ordinariates. It will be interesting to see how many in the future will be joining the different Ordinariates in several countries.

It appears small, however, it is a seed that will grow as more and more Anglicans find that without a spritual leader they will flounder and there will be more and more small groups who have a bishop, but are not united as Anglicans and each group tries to encourage ones from another group to join them. It shows how protestant they really are.

I posted this good news in another Christian Forum, where there was no seperation of Christian faiths, and I got flamed by a person claiming to be a devout Catholic. Apparantly he/she cringed as they thought the post was inflammatory - was I wrong to post it??

The same forum see’s no problem bashing the Pope!

Can’t quite see the problem they would have with the Anglican converts. This is great news and no, you weren’t wrong to post it.

Don’t worry about it. There are Catholics who are extreme on both ends. Many don’t want Anglicans because they are very traditional. It is obvious that Pope Benedict wants to bring back a more balanced faith and many of the traditions that some parishes have lost.

I love Pope Benedict, he has shown much courage in several ways and has many enemies that surround him. He is not trying to turn back the Church, however he does want to bring us “treasures” that will enhance our spiritual life and sees that in many Anglo Catholics.

I have seen the same thing on very traditional websites and also on ones who want women priests etc. Also Catholics need to be educated as to what the Apostolic Constitution means and exactly how those Anglicans accept the fullness of the Faith.

It really is an exciting time for the Church and we should welcome all who come Home to Christ’s Church.

The Anglicans haven’t used the Sarum Rite since sometime after Henry the Eighth. Although there are parts of the BCP I believe from the Sarum Use.

From my understanding, at least in the US, they would rather have the English/Anglican Missal with the Gregorian/Sarum Canon, this Canon has been used in Anglican Use parishes for the past 30 years.

As far as England many Anglo Catholics have used the Roman Rite/OF. It would be best for all if there is one liturgy for all the Ordinariates. Of course, any of the AU parishes can also celebrate the OF and the EF along with the AU liturgy that is being revised.

I know that in the past and at present some Anglo Catholic priests are very good with Latin and many have quite good voices to sing the liturgy. If you go to Our Lady of the Atonement San Antonio TX, website there is a video of the OF Mass in Latin. Also one of the AU liturgy used at present.

Sorry, I made a mistake, the Latin Mass can be found on the web under Latin Novus Ordo Mass. There is the one at OLA in six parts. The other two are Anglican Use Masses.
