Unfortunately this is found in Africa as in other parts of the world,like Mexico with Santa Muerta,and voodoo ,etc. As someone of european decesent who family members have been catholics through the centuries i just don’t grasp why this is.Even though on both sides I do have protestant relatives(Hungarian Presbytarians mom’s side,Dad’s mom was German Lutheran,later converted), they still are christians.
I don’t know whether some of the people in these mission areas cannot grasp some of the concepts of the faith, or what.

There’s superstition on this side of the pond, too. Burying a statue of (I think) St Joseph upside down in the yard to ensure a house sale; lowering a statue of St Anthony down a well to retrieve a lost item; published novenas “never been known to fail”; plus all sorts of old wives’ cures and whatnot which resemble sympathetic magic.

Protestants, non-Christians, and non-religious Spiritualists are all prone to superstitions, not just Catholics… even the self-labelled atheist can be heard wondering if ghosts haunt the cemetery or buying into some new fad - supplemental vitamins for example, no real evidence that these even work, but we Americans buy them in the $billions.
