Many Protestants Are Just Plain Ignorant

The Catholic Church has not altered the Ten Commandments of God. The Church has not dropped the “Second Commandment” as the booklet alleges. The Catholic numbering scheme may differ with the Protestant numbering scheme, but this is due to a difference in tradition and not an alteration of God’s Commandments. Unfortunately the Bible is not clear on how to divide or number the Ten Commandments. If this difference is scandalous, it would be interesting to know what the author of the booklet thought of Jesus Christ when He reduced God’s Commandments to the Two Great Commandments in Matt. 22:36-40. Finally the Church strictly condemns the adoration (divine worship) of statues, images or even the saints, since this is idolatry and in direct violation of the First Commandment. For Christians a crucifix should not be considered merely as a statue of Jesus hanging on a cross, but as a reminder of the high cost of our salvation as well as His words to us:

Worship

homage rendered to God which it is sinful (idolatry) to render to any created being (Ex. 34:14; Isa. 2:8). Such worship was refused by Peter (Acts 10:25,26) and by an angel (Rev. 22:8,9).

I’m not sure why you continue with these verses, when we all agree it is a sin to worship anything other than God. How can you claim to know where our hearts are when we give honor to Mary? It would be a dishonor even to her to worship her other than her son. Catholics tell you we don’t worship Mary, but you say we do. Are we to believe you know what we are thinking more than we know ourselves. If we are going by what it looks like from the outside without knowing where your heart is, I could say it looks like you’re worshiping your Bible. You’ve made your point and we all agree it’s a sin to worship Mary. We’ve told you we don’t worship her, but give her honor… hmmmmm give honor to the greatest mother in history, the mother of Jesus, I don’t think he’ll punish us for that one. In fact I think we as Christians are all a part of Jesus, which makes Mary my mamma to. I think I’ll obey Jesus’s order to honor thy father and mother, no matter how much it offends you. TnL- no matter how much you dislike Catholic teachings make sure you don’t dishonor his mother just to avoid being “like” a Catholic.

truthnlight, I don’t know how long you’ve been a Christian and involved in church. I get the feeling that you haven’t been around very long. That’s OK. But perhaps you should wait a little while until you’ve seen more of church life.

I became a Christian when I was seven, and attended evangelical Protestant churches until I was 47.

During all those years, many times we had ceremonies honoring our pastors, teachers, and especially missionaries. We usually honored them on their momentous birthdays (50th, 65th, etc.) and often on their anniversary of service (50 years of teaching Sunday school, etc.)

Often these occasions include testimonies about the person being honored. We tell stories of how this person has helped us to know God better.

The Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination has a yearly Missionary Council. The highlight of this Council is a massive Parade of Missionaries, where the hundreds of missionaries march in carrying the flags of their field nation. It is an extremely touching occasion and most of the people participating are in tears. Throughout this entire parade, the congregation stands and applauds. It is our tribute to these great men and woman of who have sacrificed the comforts of home to go overseas and preach the Gospel to those who’ve never heard of Jesus.

The Baptist church I grew up in had a “Mother of the Year” on Mother’s Day every year. The church lady selected would receive not only public recognition, but gifts from the church.

Almost every church I attended honored graduates each spring, usually with applause and a little gift.

As for those who have passed on, every church I’ve ever been in has some kind of “memorial.” Sometimes it is a plaque with names, more often it is various gifts to the church, e.g., the pulpit, a classroom, the windows, etc., and a plaque is posted "Window Given in Memory of Mrs. So and So.’

So Protestants not only honor those living here on earth, but the those who are now living in heaven.

**The Bible tells us to honor each other. Honoring our fellow Christians is NOT disobeying the Ten Commandments. **

What branch of Baptist were you?

I didn’t become a practicing Catholic until 2 years ago. My mom was Catholic and my dad was Baptist. I was completely ignorant of any rift between the denom’s. Until I came to CAF. Then, I was talking to an older gentleman at work and he brought up his church. I was just learning, so I wanted to talk to him about the Lord. He asked me what denom I was and I replied Catholic. He just stopped and looked at me and said “Catholic’s worship Mary”. I was stunned and just walked away. It still bothers me that, as a brother , he could say that. Even though my dad was Baptist, we had a nun live with us when I was a kid. He gave to Catholic charities, even buying the Christening fountain for my mom’s church. Never did I come across any rift before. I’m 36, btw. I just don’t get it. Tim
P.S. At my dad funeral service, the pastor read about the good samaritan. My priest was there as well.

Prayer to Mary, Queen of Heaven [these are the website words, not mine]

Queen of heaven, rejoice. Alleluia. The Son whom you were privileged to bear, Alleluia, has risen as he said, Alleluia. Pray to God for us, Alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, Virgin Mary, Alleluia. For the Lord has truly risen, Alleluia.

O God, it was by the Resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that you brought joy to the world. Grant that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, his Mother, we may attain the joy of eternal life. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The soul which recommends itself to Me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.

None of the Apostles ever mentioned Mary in their Epistles. Jesus never directed us to recognize Mary. In fact, the Bible clearly states in Matthew 11:11 that there has never been a child born amongst women greater than John the Baptist. And no wonder, because John the Baptist prepared the people for the coming of the Savior–Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world (John 1:29)

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” -1st Timothy 2:5

What is a Mediator?

Definition of Mediate: To act between parties with a view to reconciling differences. To settle a dispute.

As true believers in Christ, we believe that our saved loved ones are in heaven. However, they CANNOT make intercession for us. They can pray for us, but they have no special favor or power with God. A man once wrote me and said that I was wrong to teach that our loves ones in heaven could pray for us

Is that not what happens here on earth every time you ask a Christian brother or sister to pray for you? Did not James advice us to call for the elders of the church when we’re sick? (James 5:14). So there must be a big difference between asking someone to pray for you, verses expecting someone to reconcile things with God for you.

It wouldn’t be wrong for me to ask my departed mother in heaven to pray for me, anymore than it would be wrong for me to ask my pastor or a friend to pray for me. Asking someone to pray for you is very different than asking someone to intercede for you. 1st Thessalonians 5:25…“Brethren, pray for us.” Was the Apostle Paul asking the church of Thessalonica to mediate for him? Of course not! Paul simply realized the power of prayer. We are supposed to pray for each other (Galatians 6:2, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ”). Colossians 1:3 reads, “We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you.” Was the Apostle Paul being arrogant? Was Paul claiming to be an intercessor? I mean, couldn’t the people pray for themselves? There is nothing wrong with asking others to pray for us. Just because a loved one graduates on into glory doesn’t mean that they can’t pray for us.

In addition, take a look at Luke 15:10…“Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” In the presence of the angels? If the angels aren’t the ones rejoicing, then who is? It can only be the saints! The context of Luke 15:10 implies clearly that the believers in heaven are aware to a certain extent of the events upon the earth.

"WHAT DOES THE MESSAGE OF FATIMA REQUEST?

At Fatima Our Lady said that God wished to establish in the world devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our Lady said that many souls would be saved from Hell and the annihilation of nations averted if, in time, devotion to Her Immaculate Heart were established principally by these two means:
  1. the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by the Pope together with the world’s bishops in a solemn public ceremony, and
(2) the practice or receiving Holy Communion (and other specific devotions of about 1/2 hour in duration) in reparation for the sins committed against the Blessed Virgin Mary, on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months–a practice known to Catholics as “the First Saturday” devotion.

TnL

Are we to believe that John was greater than Jesus? Wasn’t Jesus born of a woman? Does “all shall call me blessed” ring a bell. Perhaps Jesus figured it a no-brainer that we would respect his mother that he hand-crafted.🙂

Hey TnL, why don’t you go on a missionary trip to the Vatican? I suggest you stand out in front of St Peter’s with a sign reading:
REPENT YOU MARY WORSHIPING CATHOLICS!!!
When you get arrested, you can pretend to be just like St Paul, then go get yourself shipwrecked in Malta, and do some preaching there too.

No more ignorant than many others have proven themselves about denominationss not their own, much less religions not their own. This is precisely why I stress that folks should treat opportunities such as are available here to talk with others of another religion about what their beliefs really are (at least those interested in actual civil discourse:) ) as a gift, an opportunity to learn. Accurate knowledge makes one look like much less of a dunderhead when speaking 🙂 .

A Catholic looks at statements like “worship Mary instead of Jesus” and then write off as hopelessly ignorant, not worth the time and to be avoided if possible not only the particular person who made the statement, but all of that denomination and, as can be seen by the title of this thread and subsequent posts, a huge swath of the entire faith (Protestants). All based on the uninformed statement of one person. Note that this is from Christians about other Christians, a faith with which they should be relatively familiar.

Translate that into an ill-informed statement from a Christian (Catholic or Protestant) about the beliefs of another religion, one with which they are much less familiar. What impact does that one statement have not only on that Christian’s attempts to talk to the non-Christian about Christianity relative to the person’s beliefs, but every other Christian’s attempt in the future to talk with that non-Christian? This has huge implications for a faith that stresses evangelization, in fact which believes it has a divine mandate to evangelize.
Amen, Karen. Most people (except me, of course) are relatively ignorant about their own faiths, not to mention others. In fact, most people (again, myself excluded), are relatively ignorant about most things, including the history of their own countries, current political events, science, the brand of deodorant that Paris Hilton uses, and most other topics of paramount importance. Thus, it does little good, and indeed great harm, to make global statements like “Protestants are ignorant” or “Catholics are stupid”. OTOH, it can make one feel superior to others, which is, after all, what it’s all about.

Not in Malta. I don’t think you could get away with 80+% of the country attending Sunday Mass and some sizable number of them being ignorant of the Faith.
KofC- I’m not sure about that. First of all, it looks like attendance in the Archdiocese of Malta is more like the 50’s% and dropping (discern-malta.org/census_2005.pdf)). Second, I’m very curious to know if there is any firm correlation between attendance, or even devotion, and knowledge of the faith. Are you aware of any data in this regard?

the church fathers the very disciples of John and the other aposoltes, defended the devotions to Mary and to the Saints.

Do you know what humbleness and humiliation means?

Mary wanted to be more humble and more humiliated than the dust of the ground “that is one of her most important virtudes”.

Mary is the more blessed among women and John the Baptist is mentioned as a very blessed man because he was the one that prepared the coming of Jesus.

If you dotn believe that Mary is the most blessed women then I think you should read again the gospel of Luke.

I seem logic that she is the most blessed of our race of mankind, She was the only one that raised the Lord, and there is not anyone that was more blesed than her.
When people call her only a “vessel” they misundermine “the real love” that God has to the ones that serve him and love him.

Mediator with God and men means that Jesus is the only that by his sacrificed he brought us again the friendship with God. he is the new Adam and only by him we are save.

I know you dont have this on your bible but on 2 Mac. 12,38 it talks about doing sacrifices for the deceased.

On the transfiguration Moses and Elisa were very alive.
Now imagine how much more is alive the Mother of God that was the one that raised the Saviour and consacrated her entire life to God.
She is the one that is blessed among every women and she is the glory of mankind because of her virtudes, and for her total consacration to the Lord.

Man, lol , I have already explained you what we think about that, and yet you are still quoting those stuffs. 🙂

Now answer me Why did God allowed the Israelites to make those statues of the Querubines in the ark of the covenant? remember the Querubines were being that didnt represent God, but that served him.

Baptist General Conference

Here’s their website:

bgcworld.org/intro/bgcintro.htm

My childhood church is still listed.

While I was growing up, Evelyn Christenson was my senior pastor’s wife. Gary Smalley was my associate pastor. John Ortberg was in my class and in my youth group.

I have to admit, I’m all for throwing rotten eggs at Protestants, especially when they’re “preaching the Gospel” in one of the most Christian places on Earth.
I have to admire your unrelentant willingness to show how much you hate protestants. At least you are honest. Sheesh… 😦

May God have mercy on you for not having love for your brothers and sisters in Christ.

As for the OP…

Yes, there are many protestants who are just plain ignorant but we don’t have the hold on that title. There are many catholics in that same boat. Both of their own faith and that of the protestant faith. There is a lot of hypocrasy on both sides and I tire of it…*sigh… Both sides pointing at the other screaming heretic, heathen, anti-christ, and satan! God help us…

I had to laugh when I read DixiesFinest response… when I first opened this thread I read the article. Being Catholic and living in Nashville, Tennessee and “entrenched” with Southern Baptists and the Southern Baptist Convention, I decided to write an email to the Tennessee Baptist Convention and vent my frustration about them making blind and dumb comments. To my surprise, all 4 points that DixiesFinest had pulled from the article in this post were the points that I had copied in my email to “enlighten” them a bit! Great minds MUST think alike… !!! 👍
I’m so glad you wrote. I’m writing as well. I drive past the Baptist Convention headquarters everyday. Maybe I should just drop it off, or ask to see her. The sad part is, I don’t think she said the things she said maliciously - truly just out of ignorance. I think in my email I will invite her to church. Who knows. It can’t hurt. 🤷

🙂
If I have a statue of Jesus and one of Mary, that dosent mean I will get then one statue of Zeus and then one of Apolo and another of Baal, nowadays that dosent happen. Christians stick with christianity, workshipping one God.

However the Jews of the OT were primitive people with primitive minds, if they had any image of Yavhe that will lead them to paganism and to workship many gods just like it happened to the north kingdom of Israel in the book of Kings.

God only allowed the Querubines to be in the ark as an exeption because the law of not doing images nor statues was for that very same covenant in which people were more primitive and were extremly tempted to go back to paganism, because they were surrounded by pagans.
