March for Life in Rome. The Pope: respect the embryo. Gathering at the Coliseum. Organizers: “We are 30,000”. Mayor of Rome at the head of the March. Opposing candidate affirms the mayor is just raising tension.
“Keep alive the attention on the important topic of respecting human life from conception”. This asked the Pope, saluting in the Regina Coeli the national March for Life and against abortion.
Significant political figures joined the March, but criticism also was present. The president of Radicali Italiani affirmed: “freedom of choice is the true value of life, and a civil country is judged also based on the laws it has on divorce, abortion, and end of life”. For the secretary of Rifondazione Comunista the March is “the celebration of the Church’s obscurantism”, adding: “We must protect persons, beginning with the woman - not embryos.”
When asked what his opinion was on protecting homosexual couples, the mayor of Rome stated: “everyone’s liberty must be defended, but family, as found in the Constitution, is something different.”
Left-wing national newspapers (such as Il Fatto) wrote: “against abortion, against divorce, against woman’s right to choose - Catholic intolerance and integralism coagulate around the third edition of the ‘March for Life’. In a moment in which we barely can speak of aggressions against women without being insulted, this March is another scar on woman’s independence and woman’s psychology, a March which wants the woman to be only mother.”
The mayor stopped a counter-march that was being called. Members of Rifondazione Comunista replied: “it is intolerable that the Roman citizens are forbidden to manifest against a shameful event called ‘March for Life’ in which will be present fascist formations along with obscurantist, anti-semitic Catholic groups. The worst of the worst.”
