Catholics from the fringe of both the liberal and traditionalist end have all kinds of odd-ball opinions.

Sure but when they are validly baptised as a Catholic then they become incorporated into the Church as members of the body of Christ. Nothing can ever change this; even when someone has formally defected, and returned, they aren’t re-baptised but only have to make a profession of faith - reaffirming publicly that they are part of the Church (and always have been). If they’re in danger of death, even a person who has left the Church can receive the sacraments (if they so wish) - something that couldn’t happen if they were no longer Catholic.

Baptism is just as valid if conducted by (say) a methodist. You are not “baptised as a Catholic” or “as a methodist”

Actually you are baptised as a Catholic. While a Methodist baptism (for example) would still be valid, we wouldn’t say that it makes them a member of the Church, whereas that’s exactly what comes from Catholic baptism, with all of the consequent rights and responsibilities. So the average Methodist would need to be confirmed first in order to receive the Eucharist where as a baptised Catholic doesn’t.

Have a look at what the Catechism says about baptism.
