An Orthodox friend brought this to my attention:

There are contradictions between the approved Marian apparitions in the Catholic Church.

For example, St. Catherine of Sienna was told by Mary that she was not Immaculately conceived.

He offered this as proof that the Catholic Church is not infallible.
Any opinions on this?

the usual response to such allegations is to put the burden of proof on the accuser. Where is his citation for a published Church approval of an apparition in which contained the alledged statement. Private revelation is just that, private, and NEVER if valid contradicts defined Church doctrine if it is genuine. the doctrine of the immaculate conceptions was widely held, often debated by respected theologians, but not formally defined until several hundred years after Catherine lived. I studied her life in depth when I was being taught by Dominicans and don’t recall marian apparitions, but would be quite interested in seeing the valid source.

I believe it was not viewed as a valid apparitions but private revalation that contradicted the genuine faith. It was during a time that the Dominicans and the Francisans were locked in a theological debate over this very question. As quoted in “A Still Small Voice” by Fr Benedict Groeschel, it may have been brought forward by her biographers. Preconceived private notions can influence PRIVATE revelation, the comingling of the subjective needs of the individual with the action of divine grace.
Thank you for this question early on a Sunday morning. Your Orthodox friend has helped me learn more about my faith and my Mother, the Church. What a blessing he has shared.

Interesting contradiction, the friend thinks Mary important enough to be revisiting the earth, having direct access to god, and delivering divine revelation but not important enough for an immaculate conception? Makes no sense to me, how would Mary know? She could be omniscient, or god could reveal. If she is omniscient sound more of a deity? If god told her then the church would be the venue. Either way his assertion makes n real sense to me maybe he could explain more?

All one would need to do is refer back to scripture on this one .Luke 1. When The angel Gabriel comes to her to tell her she is going to give birth to Jesus she asks him"how could this be since I have no relations with a man ?“The angel said"The holy spirit will come upon you”.This is right in scripture ,even most protestant denominations accept this .I have never heard of the incident you mentioned .She could not have denied the Immaculate Conception to her since the above verse proves it happened.

Peace be with you, Frankie

No, the Immaculate Conception is the belief that Mary was conceived without sin. What you are referring to is the miraculous conception of Jesus in Mary’s womb.

The supposed appearance of Mary to St. Catherine of Sienna is not an approved apparition; the Church doesn’t even claim that it actually occured (none of St. Catherine’s own writings mention such a thing). End of discussion, really. 🤷

Peace and God bless!

Maybe so, but there is one thing I would like to say to people who are tempted to say these visits from Mary are from satan:

Christ said, “Any blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.”

I know it is a little off topic, but it would be better to call apparitions something other than demonic.

It’s kind of funny how St. Catherine said that Mary told her she wasn’t Immaculately Conceived but she told Bernadette that she was. haha.

I believe St. Bernadette. She’s awesome and according to Fr. Groeschel, she was a little fiesty.
