Or so. Probably more.
So by whose authority have you determined what was inspired and what’s simply an ancient Christian text?
You accept that the Gospel of Mark is inspired why?
(My point: you accept it because my Mama told you. Not by any divine inspiration you’ve been given. Not by any study which allowed you to determine “the Gospel of Thomas is not theopneustos because of A, B and C and the Gospel of Mark is inspired because of D, E and F”. Only because you were* told* it was inspired)
Ok, first…remember that you are making this point to a Mormon. It is an invalid point made to a Mormon. Now I don’t pretend that many of us (and all children) do believe because Mommy said so. However, it is at the very core of our belief that this is a LOUSY way to decide religious truth. It’s a good way to learn about it; after all, trusted sources are trusted sources.
If you trust your mom, you are going to believe what she tells you because, well, she’s your mom. Being your mom, she is utterly trustworthy (hopefully). She has loved you, taught you, protected you, fed you, healed you of hurts, scolded you, played with you–moms do not betray you, in general. You trust mom–so you trust what she says.
However, there comes a time in LDS religious teaching when you have to get your own ‘testimony,’ when you can’t use Mom’s any more. There are some verses that are at the absolute basis of our beliefs regarding this issue; one is James 1:5," If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." (KJV) But if any of you want wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men abundantly, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.(Douay-Rheims).
…and then there is Moroni’s promise, found in the BoM, Moroni 3-7 (the promise is in 3-5, but I do love 6 and 7)
- 3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.
6 And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.
7 And ye may know that he is, by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore I would exhort you that ye deny not the power of God; for he worketh by power, according to the faith of the children of men, the same today and tomorrow, and forever.*
Breaking this down, we believe that first, you need to read whatever it is. Really read it. Then you need to 'ponder it in your hearts." That is, think about it. study it, work out all the …stuff…
Then (well, you should be doing this part all along, but let’s take this in the order it is mentioned in the verses) you pray to Father in Heaven, in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and ask Him if this is true. The Holy Ghost will 'manifest the truth" to you.
By this way you can know the truth of anything.
Given our beliefs regarding this issue, your insistence that we believe anything because Mommy told us is missing the target by a few fields.
If you think about this for a moment, you can see why we can accept the bible as valid–and also accept that it might not be perfect…and why we can find value in apocryphal writings, and even in other writings. The thing is, truth is truth, no matter where you find it or what it is surrounded by.–and everybody has to get their beliefs and religious conviction, ultimately, from the Source Himself. Personally–after asking for it.
