The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) banned display of the Confederate flag at its military installations Friday, on everything from bumper stickers to coffee mugs.

“The Confederate battle flag has all too often been co-opted by violent extremist and racist groups whose divisive beliefs have no place in our Corps,” the service branch said in a statement.“Our history as a nation, and events like the violence in Charlottesville in 2017, highlight the divisiveness the use of the Confederate battle flag has had on our society.”

“This presents a threat to our core values, unit cohesion, security and good order and discipline,” the statement read.

The flag is now banned from display on public and workspaces in any capacity-- bumper stickers, clothing, mugs, posters, flags, etc. It is not banned where “it is depicted, but not the main focus,” such as works of art or educational or historical displays of Civil War battles. It is also allowed on state-issued license plates and confederate soldiers’ gravesites.

Are the flags of other nations also banned?

I mean, the Confederacy rebelled against the US and was defeated by the US, so it’s kinda goofy to keep such momentoes on a US military base.

Well done! If it’s that important a symbol for Marines, and they feel an equal or greater allegiance than to the American Flag, they should leave the Corps immediately and join one of the too many existing militias.

I’m guessing this is an issue of individual Marines who happen to like the Confederate flag symbol having a flag, bumper sticker, coffee mug, patch etc in or on their personal property that they use while doing their job on the base. I can’t imagine there has been any sort of “official display” of said flag on any base recently, except in a historical museum type context.

I don’t think there has been any official display either. I’ve no seen if there were any specific situation that lead up to this, if there were general issues with it, or if that is something with similar motivations as the other removals of confederate icons from around the USA throughout this past week.

No guess about it. That was the clear statement in the image attached to the OP.

Yeah, while I can see why they did it, but it seems as poignant as announcing the banning of the flag of Sumatra in states that begin with L.

KUDOS to the Marine Corp.

Certain symbols have been hijacked over the years and no longer mean what they used to. The Nazi symbol comes to mind…no one associates it with its original meaning. When that happens, as it has to the confederate flag, it’s time to remove it from the public sphere.

The south isn’t going to rise again and it is abhorrent to many people. To continue flying it is not much different than waving a Nazi flag at Jews but telling them it isn’t representing Nazis. Sorry, but the narrative has changed. Have one in your home if you wish but not in the public sphere.

This is pretty interesting because if one visits the historic tomb of President Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881 and interred with his wife in a special memorial mausoleum built at the time that is like a small castle containing a giant statue of him and all kinds of stained glass, tile decoration, etc, there are swastika motifs all through the building tile. In 1890 when the building was constructed, the swastika was just a design motif and a good-luck symbol. Still, it is very bizarre to walk in there nowadays and see swastikas all over a building associated with a US President. I’m sure people would have complained about it if the building wasn’t off the beaten path and if Garfield, who was extremely mourned like Lincoln or Kennedy in his day, hadn’t been pretty much forgotten by everybody and his name nowadays more associated with a cartoon cat.

But Joe Biden said “many fine people who continue to fly the confederate flag” … how can it be bad?

I know, I know … supposedly Trump was the one who said neo-Nazi;s were good people in reference to Charlottesville - except he did not … here is the quote in context
And you had people — and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the White nationalists, because they should be condemned totally — but you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and White nationalists.
See the entire transcript here Joe Biden launched his campaign by lying about Donald Trump

Of course Biden also voted to restore citizenship to both Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis 😳

Personally dont know why some people cling to the loosing side … and a symbol that is associated enslaving people … 🤔 but I also dont understand the genteel racism that Biden has exhibited for decades - along with the Democratic Party - who convincingly persuade the African American community they care and will hep them.

I’m sorry but your post doesn’t have anything to do with mine. I never mentioned Biden nor Trump. What on earth are you reading into my post?

Sorry if you are offended … please realize that when you post - what you say may spark thoughts and memories in others … and it may not always be possible to control the thought path of another …

Your post brought up Nazi symbols in a thread about the Confederate Flag … That reminded me about the event in Charlottesville over the removal of a Confederate Statue … and how Trump was accused of praising neo-Nazis … coupled with the news today that the Washington and Jefferson Memorials should be removed and military bases receive name changes because they were named after Confederates … and then Biden spoke out today on race relations and bringing people together …

All of that - related - even if marginally - flooded my mind … and the one person currently in the news - who has defended the Confederacy and their symbol flag - was Biden …

Sorry if you are offended …
I’m not seeing anything “offended” in her response to you.
She made the point that your response seems to have nothing to do with her post, which is correct. It seems like the discussion just triggered some idea in your mind about Trump and Biden that has at best a peripheral connection to the thread discussion.
This thread is about the banning of Confederate flags and has nothing to do with Trump or Biden. No one has mentioned either one of them or the election in this thread.

I have mixed feeling about the confederate flag. I think some in the south see the flag as a symbol of the death of their love ones in a civil war and a part of their heritage, not in relationship to slavery.

They are proud to be southerners. Nasca banning it is probably a bigger deal.

The marines can have wican symbols on headstones and ceremonies. Nah.

I’m generally not a big fan of banning stuff, but as someone else said it makes sense to limit a service branch to displaying the flag of our nation plus any official flag of the service branch. A flag of a conquered nation doesn’t fit in that category.

I just hope we don’t reach the point where historical re-enactors and museums are forbidden to display it in the historical context. I remember a few years ago someone complaining that the Confederate flag was included in a display of historic US flags and wanted it removed. That’s ridiculous, given that it was indeed a historic flag of a large part of the US for a period of time and belongs in such a display.

As a retired Marine, I was very proud to see the Corps do this. Way overdue.

I hear this a lot, but I have trouble believing it, honestly. The confederate flag over the South Carolina capital was put up in 1961. Not 1870, when people were alive that were mourning their lost loved ones. In 1961 during the height of the civil rights era and the push for black voting rights. The flag has long been used as a symbol of opposition to equal rights for all.
