No, but Catholicism does teach that they are one God. So that doesn’t make sense to me. God is all knowing, right? Shouldn’t all three persons of the trinity be all knowing then?
Except for that little belief that Jesus is also Fully Human. Which means He has a human mind that is completely separate from His Divine Will. The human mind learns only what it learns and only what His Divinity reveals to Him.

Why do you think the Apostles called it a mystery?

He should have a divine mind then too shouldn’t he? I mean, after all, he’s both fully human and fully divine. 😉

Holly, didn’t you just write a well-written article on the Eucharist… merely a few days ago?!? Just because you don’t understand, doesn’t mean you should run away from it. Look back to your article. Remember Peter’s words at the end of John 6? “Lord, to whom else would we go? For you have the words of everlasting life.” Translation - “Jesus, I have on clue what you are saying, but I know that You know what you are talking about”.

Try and be like Peter, even when you don’t understand!
Sorry, I can’t do that this time. I am much happier as an Eclectic Wiccan.

Jesus’ professed ignorance or the day and hour may be hyperbole (overstatement) which he and Jewish rabbis used as teaching devices (Mt 5:34; 23:9; Lk 14:26). In otherwords, this is a figurative expression instead of a literal statement. The Father and the Son share everything in common, including their divine knowledge (Mt 11:27; Jn 3:35). Jesus doesn’t display human knowledge of the time when the Father will send him, because the Father doesn’t intend Jesus to reveal the time.

So in other words, Jesus may have lied? 🤷

It is more exciting this way. Maybe He kept it secret for the beauty of secrecy.

I’m confused now. :o
How so?

The Father had a good reason to keep it secret. I trust Him. I don’t know why He kept it secret. This is how He made it be. If there is a trinity that all in the trinity are absolutely equal in every possible way.

So now you aren’t a Christian just because Jesus doesn’t know the hour of His coming? This is quite stupid and you know it.

It might be helpful to keep in mind that God created (among other things) time as we know it. God, however, as the creator, transcends time. The creation that we know and live in was created by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, working in perfect harmony with each other…’
The Son existed with God before creation?
What God was like before He created us, we do not know (nor do we need to)
The Creator is the same as He has always been.
To answer your questions -
  1. God is three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) in one being (God). Even the Hebrew uses the plural form when speaking of God (Elohim), yet they recognize that He is one.
Yes, but this is not a plural of numbers but a plural of respect. The Jews didn’t believe that God was 3 divine persons either. So this is not a proof that ‘others’ were with God assisting each other in making creation.

The Qur’an also uses the plural of respect when refering to God throughout the Qur’an.

Ex:

2:50 And remember We divided the sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharaoh’s people within your very sight.
  1. Any member of the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) can do anything. Each one is God in the every sense.
With this definition, then Jesus(peace be upon him) should have known when the Hour was because according to what was stated above#2], Jesus is God in ‘every sense’.

Even when you use the word ‘each’ this shows distinction or difference between individuals.

The Creator cannot be broken into parts or be divided because the definition of part(context of things being seperate or together) is something seperated from the whole;something needed to constitute a whole. We know that The Creator is not in need of anything because once something has a need, then it is weak. The Creator has no partners and needs nothing. He is One and Only and can’t be divided into parts.
  1. When I said “Only Jesus became incarnate”, I meant that the second person of the Godhead (the Son) became incarnate. Neither the Father nor the Holy Spirit became incarnate.
Again if they are each ‘God in every sense’ then that means that all of them became flesh because you said that the Definition of God = Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and that each of these are God in ‘every sense’.

Isn’t this because God didn’t reveal it to him(Jesus)? or God didn’t intend God to reveal the time??

The Son ≠ The Father
They are not the same person.
Who told you that The Son is the exact same person as The Father?
I thought the Catholics believe that Jesus(peace be upon him) was God?

There seems to be a lot of ambiguity regarding Who God is and what He isn’t i.e., the concept of God within catholicism.

This is just my view on this issue:

I would say that the only way to reconciliate the contradictory statements is by saying that Jesus (peace be upon him) only knows what The Creator has revealed to him to know. So if **he said **that he didn’t know something, then that is the truth. The Creator is the Only one Who knows everything. This doesn’t mean that Jesus (peace be upon him and his blessed mother) is less in status because he said that he didn’t know something; he was a human being and a messenger, just like the messengers that came before him(peace be upon all of them). Their status is much greater than any one of us even if they said ’ I don’t know’ to something. ‘I don’t know’ simply means The Creator has not revealed this knowledge to me. If Jesus(peace be upon him) truely said something and it came to be then this is a matter of prophecy that was not exclusively given to him.
Jesus Christ is the creator of heaven and earth and is God from God,light from light, true God from true God,He is also the light of the world and the word of God - perhaps it is not possible or expected for man to fully comprehend God - twinc

I think you are right Twinc. I don’t think that man is expected fully comprehend God. The Trinity is a mystery after all. Not even the doctors of the Church have ever fully understood the Trinity.

So your trying to tell me that God, The Ever-Living, died on a cross?

What does ‘God from God’ mean? sounds like 2 Gods here.

**1st question: **Yes, Jesus died. Somebody would be immortal not because that somebody never died, but because death has no power over that somebody. So Christ is still immortal even if He died, because what makes Him immortal is not that He never died, but because death has no power over Him. So even if He would have died 100 times, the fact that He can ressurect is what makes Him immortal. Let’s say that a person has killed another person 123 times, and another 123 times that person that was killed resurrected, and it will keep resurrecting. Are you telling me that this person is not immortal because the person died? Isn’t resurrecting every time what makes the person immortal? It is the same with Jesus. What makes Him immortal is the fact that death could not reign over Him, but He enslaved death. What makes Jesus immortal is the fact that He resurrected. This proves that death has no power over Him, and that He is immortal.

**2nd question: **There are three persons that form a God. There is only One God. This is like the man and the woman. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.~Genesis 2:24 Of course, there is no strange metamorphosis between the man and the woman, right? It’s not like if they merge together in a monster with two heads or something. When in the Jewish language they say one, in this context, they refer to unity. I and the Father are one. ~John 10:30 Of course, Jesus is not the Father Himself, I mean the exact same person or Living Being, as you want to call Him; but He and the Father are One meaning that they work as One, they think as One, they feel as One. This is the correct meaning, not that they are one single being. *…that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. *~John 17:21 Of course, we will not merge with the Father and the Son, but we will think like Them, act like Them and be as Them (in righteousness). It also means unity, teamwork. It also means compatibility. It means as well that they form one body, or one team.

So there is only one God, but it is composed by three Beings, and those are One. Is it clearer now?

Jesus was fully human in addition to being fully Divine (people tend to forget that part). The human mind had to learn to walk and talk and eat. It didn’t automatically have fully access to divine knowledge, although His Godly Self did. Jesus’ Divine Will did not reveal this to His Human Will.
this is exactly right, and so simple. Jesus had two minds, the divine mind knew everything, the human brain didn’t. when he came to earth he was using his human brain, he had a kind of amnesia or selective amnisia, he could only remeber some things that happened with him but not everything.

This scripture is showing that while Jesus was on earth he was using the part of his mind that didn’t know everything.

Do you have anything to back up your assertion that Jesus had a kind of amnesia or selective amnesia while on earth? Cause honestly, I don’t believe it.

You cannot force a wrong definition into a word. You said ‘Christ is still immortal even if he died’

This is a contradiction in terms. The definition of immortal is being ‘exempt from death’ and obviously someone who dies is not exempt from death therefore since Jesus ‘died’, according to you, he is not immortal.
Let’s say that a person has killed another person 123 times, and another 123 times that person that was killed resurrected, and it will keep resurrecting. Are you telling me that this person is not immortal because the person died? Isn’t resurrecting every time what makes the person immortal? It is the same with Jesus. Your saying the same thing over again. The definition of resurrect is to be ‘raised from the dead’ meaning that whatever died was deprived of life. Even for the sake of argument, the person keeps coming back to life, the fact is he/she still died. The Creator can never be described with these Attributes. It is impossible for God to die.
**2nd question: **There are three persons that form a God. There is only One God. This is like the man and the woman. If the man was asked ‘are you your wife’ he would say ‘no!’ and vise versa.

You believe that God is made up into parts which is another impossibility for God. Parts make up a whole, so in order to be whole, the parts need to come together. God does not have needs. Whatever has needs must be a creation of God.
I and the Father are one. ~John 10:30 Of course, Jesus is not the Father Himself, I mean the exact same person or Living Being, as you want to call Him; but He and the Father are One meaning that they work as One, they think as One, they feel as One. You say that they are ‘not a single being’ yet you said when Jesus died it meant that God died too.

It would have been better if you stopped at ‘there is only one God,’. You say that The One God is ‘composed’. This means, and I seek refuge in Allah from this, that He was put together. His parts were arranged in order to specify Him.The Creator is The One Who composes i.e.,arranges everything, but He is not composed because whatever is composed has a Creator to specify how it should be.

No offense intended towards you SonofAdam but perhaps it would do you better to start your own thread on these topics? I think they’d get more attention that way. 🙂

God Bless,

SonofAdam:
The Son existed with God before creation?
Yes, as did the Holy Spirit.
The Creator is the same as He has always been.
From the moment He created all that we are aware of, He has always been Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Yes, but this is not a plural of numbers but a plural of respect. The Jews didn’t believe that God was 3 divine persons either. So this is not a proof that ‘others’ were with God assisting each other in making creation.
We only know what God has chosen to reveal about Himself in Scripture. To use a very poor analogy, consider identical triplets. They are all the same BEING (i.e. - human), but they are definitely three individual PERSONS (even with the same DNA, they have different finger prints, and will develop different likes, personalities, interests, etc…). God is one BEING (there is only one God), but there are three PERSONS (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) in that one BEING of God. Of course, God is much more complex than humans (which is why this is a poor analogy). Consider this - if the Father and the Son did exactly the same things, one of them would be unnecessary. However, it appears that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit agreed on a seperation of “jobs” (for lack of a better term) in the creation that we are part of. Why God did this, we do not know, but the result is that the Father knows something that Jesus doesn’t. Could Jesus find out? I have no doubt that He could (I find nothing in Scripture to indicate that the Father would withhold anything from the Son). So why didn’t Jesus find out and let us know? Because God is smarter than we are! There have been instances when people thought the Lord was coming back on a specific day. They sold everything they had, went to a mountain top (or a very large hill, anyway) and waited for His return. God doesn’t want us to do that. Instead (as He makes clear in the Scriptures), we are to be good stewards of the time we have. This is also why the Holy Spirit doesn’t know (but, again, I have no doubt He could find out if He so desired).

I believe the above answers question 2’s comments as well.
Again if they are each ‘God in every sense’ then that means that all of them became flesh because you said that the Definition of God = Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and that each of these are God in ‘every sense’.
It was the “job” (for lack of a better term) of Jesus to be born as a human being (the incarnation), not the Father or the Holy Spirit. However, Paul tells us in Col 2:9 that “for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily,” (ASV). So, in this way, the Father and Holy Spirit are represented in the flesh through Jesus (the Son). But again, only the Son was incarnate.

No, but Catholicism does teach that they are one God. So that doesn’t make sense to me. God is all knowing, right? Shouldn’t all three persons of the trinity be all knowing then?
Since we are created within time and matter, what distinguishes us as seperate persons is a visible beginning, middle, and end. If we we look at life that is not created, life that has always been, life with no beginning middle or end, no matter how many distinct divine persons exist within that life, we are only able to see one being, one person.

Without the aid of divine revelation we would never know the inner life of God. But if God does reveal the inner life of Himself , whatever, how ever many, whoever He reveals to have always been, it would always be more mysterious than understood because with human reason alone God is one.

However many Persons are uncreated and have always been, without the aid of divine revelation we could only reason that God is one.
