In Mark 3:29, Jesus says that anyone who blasphemes against the holy spirit can never be forgiven. But I thought any sin could be forgiven? Is this just emphasizing that that is one of the worst sins, and not meant to be taken literally? Or is someone who blasphemes against the holy spirit eternally guilty, even after confession?

Also known as the “unpardonable sin”, this translation does confuse people.

This refers to someone who refuses God’s mercy right up to and at the moment of their death. If you are still alive, you can still repent. After death there is no repentance.

Ah this old favourite.

Really does require good definition of a persons understanding of ‘blasphemy against the Holy Spirit’ or what that entails in comparison to sin at large.

In short, to never accept Jesus in the first place makes forgiveness (or not) a moot point.

Blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can be forgiven, as all mortal sins, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. What the passage is making perfectly clear is that such as sin (which is actually the sin of disbelief) can be overcome by conversion, and does constitute “grave matter”, so if such blasphemy is done with full knowledge and consent, is a mortal sin.

But, of course, because Jesus Christ instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation, it was God’s merciful plan to give us a means to receive His divine forgiveness for any of our human faults.

Rejoice and be glad!

Final impenitence. Dying in a state of sin, while refusing God’s mercy. From Fr. John Hardon’s Catholic Dictionary:
IMPENITENCE, FINAL. Dying unreconciled with God, whether through loss
of faith, or through despair, or through a blasphemous rejection of God’s love.

I’m not sure I understood: is it a sin (if it is, is it mortal or venial?) to think you sinned so badly God can’t forgive you?

In essence it’s the sin of disbelief, or denying Christ up until death.

Of course you can’t be forgiven, because you’ve made the choice to want nothing to do with God in the first place. Thus you have chosen to not be forgiven yourself.

As God can’t contradict himself or your granted free will, you aren’t forgiven it, because you don’t want to be.

I am pretty sure you can believe in Christ but fail to ACCEPT his mercy…At least that is what I always thought it referred to.

‘’When one receives Christ, they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. If one doesn’t receive Christ, then they do not receive the Holy Spirit, which is blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. This aligns perfectly with Jesus being the only way and the only name by which one can be saved (John 14:6; c.f. Acts 4:12).’’
