Marquette rescinds offer to an openly gay sociologist

Nancy E. Snow, a professor of philosophy at Marquette who had supported Dr. O’Brien’s candidacy for dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said of the decision, “This is discrimination based on sexual orientation, and is a complete betrayal of our commitment to human dignity and diversity.”

What’s Nancy E Snow even doing there as a professor herself? If you click on her name link, " She and her “partner” Mary enjoy their 3 cats and 2 dogs" (paraphrasing).

I think Marquette is definitely sending mixed messages here… .either be a Catholic Uni or lose the name. Has nothing to do with sexual discrimination, has everything to do with following the precepts of a CATHOLIC faith run university.
 
Marquette should be able to do whatever they want, they are a private institution.

Having said that, I personally am uncomfortable-deeply so, with the denial of anyone’s job over their private life.

Again, just to reiterate, Marquette is free to do as they wish.

It would seem that her writings appear to be the sticking point, since the university has a lesbian professor of philosophy-looking at her list of published works, they seem nowhere near as radical as those of the woman whose offer was revoked.
 
I’m still not understanding why this wasn’t handled better before the offer was made? Her larger research & theoretical framework (on sex & gender) should have been properly reviewed before an offer was on the table. Her sociological work was there to review, it should have been.

She was not denied the job because of her “private life”. Quite the contrary. The article states that she is openly gay and has written frequently about sexuality in academic journals. That makes her “private” life quite public. As a Catholic institution, Marquette University must have the right to demand that its employees reflect the values and teachings of the Catholic Church. Just like anyone else, she is free to accept those values and teachings and try to live by them, or she is free to seek employment at a public university which promotes secular values.
