my wife & i have been going thru a long annullment(3 1/2 years) we were going to have a much anticipated wedding mass then found out that my vasectomy which i had 20 yrs. ago b/fore i met her poses a problem.can you offer me some advice please???

Check with your priest, but I think if you take it to confession and are forgiven, you should be OK. —KCT

If it is confessed in the confessional with contrition then there shouldn’t be a problem. I am not aware of your age but its too bad you cant have kids…they are a total hoot (unless you of course already have kids then …nevermind you know great it was.)

What specifically were you told regarding the vasectomy “posing a problem”, and by whom?

Sterility is NOT an impediment to a valid marriage, per se. There may be more to the situation than you have stated.

i am 64 yrs old & know the “hoot” of children,i have 5 of my own & have raised my present wifes child since he was 2 yrs old, he is now 16. as far as cofessing i am not a catholic, hence i would guess i would not be allowed in confessional. yhis all came to light this a.m. when my wife spoke of it being a problem… she works for the diocese as a catechist & seen to be up on it all. ill talk w/preist i guess & see what happens, if you have any xtra prayers i would be appreciative, this is driving me cuckoo!!! thank you all, Terry

talk to the priest, unless there are factors not stated (and please don’t give us any more personal info) there is no barrier to your marriage based on the fact of vasectomy alone.

Not necessarly, however you should consider reversing it if that is possible. You should make sure that your pastor understands the circumstances.

I still don’t think there is an impedment to getting Married. Good job on the kids and as you and I said they are a HOOT.

You may want to consider joining up with the catholic church… Like you said confessionis not possible but the absolute best person to answer you question would be the priest who would be marrying you. Sorry you are going cuckoo…I feel for ya…hang in there…I am sure a past vasectomy will not impede your marriage.

At 64 years of age what’s the point? Its over and done and all in the past. Reversals are not all that sure and easy. As for contrition for having had it, not being a Catholic and probably being unaware that it was wrong at the time. Where’s the sin? At 64 most men have more sense than to marry a young chickee that can still have kids. The chance of any new child reaching adulthood before the young chickee drives him into cardiac arrest is fairly slim. I know there are exceptions but being a Grandfather at this stage in life is a lot more appropriate than looking to procreate yet once again.🤷

I appreciate the replies I have received but I am interested in knowing where you get your information.
May I ask who it is who answers these questions that are posted. I see different signatures such as: Senior and Br and all, but who are you?
I would like to post these questions to a priest or someone knowledgeable in cannon law.
This has been a long 3 years and the entire process has brought great pain to our family and to each other. I just ask that I please receive an honest answer from someone who can speak from first hand knowledge and authority in this matter.
From what I have read the Marriage can not be convalidated by the Catholic church if it is not open to the procreation of children. Are there exceptions to this rule? Thank you for your honest reply.

I of course posted my answer after only reading your original post, before knowing more of your details. Even though, God’s moral law of all sexual acts between husband and wife being open to the possibility of new life, even if it seems new life may not be possible is still valid. Also notice that I said you should consider it, not that it was required for the validity of the Marriage. Any Marriage entered into with the intention of excluding the possibility of children is considered an invalid Marriage. Entering a Marriage with a vasectomy would most likely be considered entering Marriage with the intention of excluding children. The best place to ask would be the priest preparing you for the Sacrament of Marriage. I have told you in a general way the basic application of Canon Law. I am in no position to speak to your specific case and canon law, nor would I even try.

You should probably post your question in the Ask the Apologist forum to get an “official” answer.

Unless I missed it, nowhere do you state how you “found this out” after 3 years of marriage preparation. Who told you? what was his authority, when and how fully did you discuss this with the priest preparing you for marriage? as has been stated, many times here, and in response to your request for authority, the priest is that authority. we can give general answers here. If you do a search in the AAA forum under vasectomy you will find several references to answers citing canon law and other authority. which is great. but if you want direction in your personal situation, urgent since you have been given misinformation, see the priest who is preparing you for marriage.

I think I gave as much an official answer as possible in a public forum!!
I’m not discounting your advice at all. It just seems the OP may have thought he wasn’t asking (mostly) lay people when he posted the question. I thought since he was new to the forum he didn’t really understand that.
