Marriage Amendment: The Archbishop Draws the Line

This prominent U.S. bishop is becoming an important defender of Catholic values. Most conspicuously, he is the leading person in the state working for the passage of an amendment to the Minnesota state constitution that would ban gay marrige.

Deo gratias! Archbishop Nienstedt is another of Pope Benedict XVI’s appointments, like the archbishops of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, who will be instrumental in defeating the threat of secularist-influenced liberalism/modernism in our Church.
 
What a stupid article. I don’t mean the archbishop’s position – which is obviously the Catholic and logical position to hold – but the smug little innuendos that the writer slipped in:

“Nienstedt’s central role in the campaign has also brought blistering criticism from the faithful.” Um, if you don’t agree with the Catholic position on marriage, then you aren’t “faithful.”

“For an ambitious archbishop, the marriage amendment offers the potential for advancement in the Catholic hierarchy.” The writer clearly implies that Nienstedt is doing this to impress the pope and get more “power.” Hey, did it ever occur to the writer that the archbishop might actually be interested in promoting truth?

Ugh. Can’t take anymore of the drivel.

We call that being “snarky.” Not sure where that came from, but there you are. 🙂

I still find it amazing when practicing Catholics approach me, asking whether the clergy will begin supporting SS"M." Apparently these people never took a logic class: The concept that the Church would not only approve of such an arrangement, but would support the institutionalization of such an arrangement flies in the face of the Church’s entire theology on the unalterable complementarity of male and female (based on scripture), and on the Church’s condemnation (continued from the Judaism of Jesus) of homosexual behavior.

The Church will never advocate for civil SS"M." Ever. Nor will she even be neutral about it. It is fundamentally incompatible with the very framework of Catholic moral theology.

Either such people who approach me are in denial, or they have been poorly catechized.

They might have taken a logic class, and might have received an A+.

However, when the love of sin conflicts with logic, too many people shove logic aside so that they can embrace the sin.​
 
By “Faithful” the article was surely referencing people who identify themselves as Catholics. And I know there is a significant percentage of Catholics who will be voting no come Nov 6.

And the notion that Nienstedt is doing this to get himself a promotion is not unique to the newspaper. I have talked to several clergy and others within the Church who feel the same way. And this “sucking up for promotion” notion has roots well beyond his predominant role in the amendment movement.
