If a Ukrainian Catholic man marries a Roman Catholic woman can they be married in either Church?

If they are married in the Roman Catholic Church, it requires permission of the Ukrainian bishop, and the wedding must be done by a priest, not a deacon.

CCEO Canon 829
  1. From the day of taking canonical possession of office and as long as they legitimately hold office, everywhere within the boundaries of their territory, local hierarchs and pastors validly bless the marriage of parties whether they are subjects or non-subjects, provided that at least one of the parties is enrolled in his Church sui iuris.
CCEO Canon 831 …
1 (3) also, a place exclusively of another Church sui iuris, unless the hierarch who exercises power in that place expressly refuses.
2. The marriage is to be celebrated before the pastor of the groom, unless either particular law determines otherwise or a just cause excuses.

So technically it could be at either the bride or groom’s parish, but the grooms pastor would bless normally.

Oh okay. Just asking because I just submitted my change of church forms. I think the woman I am dating is “the one” and she’s Roman Catholic. She is interested in the East but her family is very Roman Catholic and my family is non-practicing or liberal Roman Catholic. That’s gunna be done the road a bit but it’s good to know what the options are, because as everyone knows the wedding ceremony is really for the parents, not for the couple.

The Church I go to is referred to by my family as the “dome Church” or the “Church that is like Anne’s Church with the priests with the ‘scary’ beards” (Anne is a long time neighbor and friend of my family who is Greek Orthodox.) Apparently a Great Aunt of mine who lives near the UGCC parish also thinks that it’s “not Catholic”…voná polacka…nuff said…

If you end up marrying this woman, and decide to marry in the Latin Church, perhaps a TLM would be a nice compromise. Gives you more solemnity, like the Eastern Rites, but still Latin/Roman.

God Bless

Nah… Once you’ve experienced the East…even the TLM is like a flat soda. 😃
