Many posters here warned me to get away from my fiance and his family in the past. But I was in love, and I didn’t listen, and now here I am. So first, I’m sorry for not taking your advice. I’d probably be much happier if I had.
On to the problem:
After my husband and I got married, we went on a honeymoon, and everything seemed great, however, when we returned from the honeymoon, things were disastrous. First, his brother, who was my employer, had decided to let me go so I could be a Stay-at-Home-Wife/Mom. We don’t have any children, and we needed my income. Second, my FIL, who was also my doctor, had decided he was going to stop prescribing me my psychiatric medication, because it would be “Bad for a developing baby”. My mental health quickly deteriorated, and I am still trying to get $$ to get back on the medication, as the insurance plan I have is one that was ‘grandfathered in’ to ACA.
Over the first year of our marriage, my husband repeatedly put his family’s wants ahead of my needs. They would openly belittle both of us, then turn around and demand our help with anything and everything. When I asked him to stand up to them, he refused, saying it would just hurt us financially (he works for his father.)
After a while, when the depression got worse, I stopped going to Church, because every time I went I felt like I was being mocked. I had tried to be a good wife, but my needs were not being met. Every time I tried to sit down with my husband and tell him this, he would just cry and tell me he was sorry but he couldn’t do anything. Finally, About 6 months into our marriage, I got him to come talk to a priest with me. I missed how happy I used to be going to Mass, and being Catholic. Now it felt like a chain around my neck. After talking to us both extensively, the priest told my husband in no uncertain terms that part of what he agreed to in marriage was to leave his father and mother and cleave to me. He told the priest he couldn’t do that, wouldn’t do that, because he needs his family. The priest sighed and said maybe we should look into whether or not it’s a valid marriage. Immediately my husband started crying and begging me “not to leave him”. And at first, I didn’t. I stayed with him and tried to make the best of it, but my mental health got worse and worse, and I realized I was starting to contemplate suicide.
I finally sat down with him and said I needed to leave, for myself, since he wasn’t considering what was best for me - I had to. I moved halfway across the country, but my confidence in the Church, and myself, had been shattered. I ended up shacking up with one of my guy friends and trying to medicate myself with alcohol and sex. Finally, said guy friend realized how far off the deep end I’d gone, and paid for me to see a therapist and psychiatrist, and get back on psychiatric medication.
I’m starting to get better. Slowly. But now said guy friend wants me to proceed with the annulment and stay with him. He’s been more ‘husbandly’ in the regards to taking care of me and helping lift me up than my husband ever did. But at the same time, he’s a “Cafeteria Catholic” and doesn’t agree with the Church’s stance on things like birth control, abortion, or pre-marital sex.
My husband is devout, and begging me to come home. But nothing there has changed. He still works for his father, and is constantly emotionally badgered by them. I feel a great weight on my chest every time I talk to him, because all he ever talks about is how much he misses me, and how horrible his family is. When I left I told him he needed to get himself seperate from them.
But this is all a swirling vortex around the real problem - I miss the Church. I want to go back, but I don’t feel like I can until I get this sorted out. I don’t know if I can hurt someone who has been so good to me, to go back to being miserable, because that’s what the Church says I should do. I don’t really have anywhere else to go, anyway.
