My husband and I are both Catholic. We were both married before - to persons of no religion and not baptised in any faith. We are both divorced - but not because either of us necessarily wanted to be. (No one really gets married so they can ultimately be divorced - no one) Anyway, we met - long after out divorces were over - neither of us had dated anyone else-and after dating for 3 years, decided to get married. Everyone at church was thrilled - even our priests. We had a beautiful wedding, wrote our own vows, and we are doing just fine. Thank you. No, we did not get annulments. We don’t have the money. No money - so we don’t get to go to heaven. We go to church almost every Sunday, we have our ‘coffee’ ministry, my husband is a lector (next Sunday he has been asked to give the Catholic Appeal talk). We don’t go to communion - but we participate in everything else. We go to church because we want to - not because of some ridiculous ‘mortal sin law’.
If your marriage isn’t working, look at yourself and your partner - will probably find what did not work for you in your previous marriages is what is not working now. If you really want to work on your marriage, go to a real counsellor. An annulment won’t fix anything just as having a baby won’t fix anything.
