ALMOND, NY - “You’d better call me Deacon until Saturday,” said John Cornelius with a laugh, during an interview Wednesday at the Rectory of St. Brendan Church in this small, Allegany County community, where he has served as a pastoral associate.

On Saturday in a ceremony in nearby Wellsville, Cornelius, 64, will become a Catholic priest when Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo ordains him.

And what he said:

“We don’t have to take that particular vow,” explained Cornelius, noting an exception from the Pope for former Episcopal priests who are already married.

However, he and his wife have decided celibacy will become a part of their married life nonetheless.

“We have decided to do that voluntarily,” Cornelius said. “I have always had friends that are Roman Catholic priests and I appreciate what they’ve given up to serve god and the priesthood. You’re probably the first people outside of the Catholic Church that I’ve told this to, but I have such appreciation and affection for these guys, that it’s just part of my own spirituality to do this…out of respect for them really.”
 
Not a vow of celibacy which means to remain unmarried…they are taking a vow of chastity.

All married people are called to live chastely.

It’s continence. Celibacy = unmarried. Chastity is enjoined on all married couples. Continence is the willful abstention from sexual relations.

But, still Alleluia! If it his done with his wife’s consent, it is to the glory of the almighty living GOD. Not to mention the entire Catholicism aspect. He must have come from one of those “nosebleed high” (to quote GKC: “Anglicans are a motley crew”) Episcopal churches, or have come from one so liberal he was turned away by the Spirit.

We are happy to have Malone here as well.

Maybe the definitions of chasitity, celibacy and continence could be a sticky.

On the other hand, 3-4 posts to define the terms has a familiar rhythm I might start to miss.

On topic: Why are they sharing that piece of information?
 
LOL, this entire thread is nothing but defining exactly which word to use for his vow of abstention from sexual activity in his circumstance.

I guess there isn’t much one can say about a private decision they chose to make public.

I imagine they would have the same conditions of a Josephite marriage; will they announce their decision to exercise their marital rights, too?
 
I made it to his 2nd mass here in Rochester - It was the Anglican Use mass and the Ordinarite of the Personal Prelature of the Chair of St. Peter showed up.

It was a very good experience and Fr. Cornelius seems like a very nice, holy person.
