The prohibition on married Priests has not always existed (right? The first Pope was married.) so it seems that it is not outside the realm of possibility that married Priests could come back.

What do you think?

I just dont think either should be. I dont agree with it at all. As for married priests I dont get it. They are supposed to be married to the church. I would think a wife would complicate things. Our parish priest already never has enough time for his parishoners, I can only imagine if he had a wife and a family. And what happens if a priest gets divorced and has no grounds for annulment, etc. Then you are going into a whole other problem. I just think it would be too much to allow something like that.

God Bless, Kerri

regardless of how we “feel” about it, priests remaining celibate is simply a discipline, not a doctrine.

It is one thing to have a opinion and to want to keep the tradition of your Church, but to make a statement like this is just plain offensive.

Please explain yourself.

The Eastern Catholic Churches, mainly the Churches of the Byzantine Rite, have had married clergy since the beginning and we still have them today.

Not only that, there are many married priests within the Latin Church, converts to Catholicism who Rome approved the ordination of.

So your statement is false.

My pastor is married. Priestly celibacy is a discipline but there are exceptions. Married Anglican priests, or married Lutheran ministers have been allowed under certain circumstances to become Catholic priests. If their wife dies, they cannot remarry.
However, a single man once ordained a priest or deacon can never marry.

As far a female priest(ess), there is a better chance of somebody coming up with a way to draw a square circle than a woman ever being ordained a Catholic Priest(ess). Remember, Pope John Paul the Great didn’t say “he” had no authority to ordain women; he said “The Church” has no authority. My understanding is that this is a non-issue in Europe. It’s strictly an American feminist, disobedient, new age dissidents that think they can get their own way. If their foolish desires to become priest are so great, then they should switch to Anglicanism.

How about homosexual priest marriage? How about priest marrying his donkey? Once we allow priests to marry, all hell gonna break lose.

LOL, you do realize that the celibacy DISCIPLINE was put in place because one of the Popes was a Benedictine, and Benedictines are required to take a vow of Celibacy and that Pope thought it would be good for the entire Church. And for a long time it was, however even though the faith doesn’t change with the times, disciplines can and have and it’s time for the Church to look into allowing married priests. Perhaps following the way the Eastern Church does it. If you are married before you are ordained, that is fine, but you can’t marry after you are ordained.

Gelsbern,

I wouldn’t bother responding to this post anymore. Unless I am mistaken, MugenOne is mocking.

The first pope had a wife at one time, but I don’t see any compelling evidence that he was still married upon becoming a disciple of Christ.

I would bet that if you asked anyone who is married, they would say that marriage is also a discipline.

I don’t believe priest should be allow to marry (after ordination). But I do believe married men should be allowed to continue to be priests, at least in some rites of Catholicism.

If he wasn’t a widower, would that have disqualified him? Or did they make him get rid of her?

Uniate churches manage to have married priests. If the Roman rite does allow the same practice, they should do as the eastern churches do and limit bisoprics to celebate men.

Agree, except that the Greek Church has a lot of celibate priests simply because they couldn’t find women who liked the idea of being a local pastor’s wife.

So what happened to his wife???

there will never be female priests, this is definitive doctrine.

However, the rule about married priests is ecclesial not divine. Nonetheless, nobody should ever interpret that as a licence to start campaigning…the Holy Spirit will do it IF and WHEN he chooses

It is possible for it to come back. It is only a discipline, so it can be changed.

As for female preists, that is impossible.

“priestessess” - impossible
married clergy - possible but very unwise. there woudl be too much pressure on the family, it would break up causing scandal in the church. Also financially it would be bad for the priest and the diocese (you know priests wouldn’t use ABC so they would have big families). and a priest is on call and willing go anywhwrere for any reason the church needs, that would be quite the chaos for children.
