Anybody got the stats of the number of young men currently entering the priesthood? And how does the Church investigate its potential new priests? Or do they?

I dunno about stats, but if you go to the USCCB website you’ll find a sizeable document regarding the guidelines for the formation process for seminarians and priests which covers the celibacy aspect in great detail. Dioceses and orders DO run background checks on applicants to seminary and also run them through a battery of psychological tests.

Unfortunately it seems the reason they do so has more to do with avoiding further lawsuits than anything to do with “formation” per se. But if it helps weed out men who shouldn’t be in the priesthood, so be it.

Thank you for your insight. It is equally difficult to have discussion with those who refuse to answer a question beyond hiding behind the “because the Church says so” rock.

It is fascinating to read so many threads, where posters trot out scripture, early church writings, and more recent writings of Popes and Bishops to defend any position the Church takes, yet on this issue…“because the Church says so” is all anyone can come up with to explain a clear contradiction.

:banghead:
This is exactly the type of post I was referring to. It is completely non-sequiter. Just a blind attack based on absolutely nothing that I posted.

This is insulting and completely uncalled for.

But not unexpected.

It is an interesting point of view however. The person asks why the Church does certain things in a particular way. When an explanation is given referring to church documents, he complains saying, “because the church say say so” is no a good answer. It is a self-defeating argument. Thus it is impossible to satisfactorily answer this person because they deny the source.
