I dunno about stats, but if you go to the USCCB website you’ll find a sizeable document regarding the guidelines for the formation process for seminarians and priests which covers the celibacy aspect in great detail. Dioceses and orders DO run background checks on applicants to seminary and also run them through a battery of psychological tests.Anybody got the stats of the number of young men currently entering the priesthood? And how does the Church investigate its potential new priests? Or do they?

Unfortunately it seems the reason they do so has more to do with avoiding further lawsuits than anything to do with “formation” per se. But if it helps weed out men who shouldn’t be in the priesthood, so be it.
