I am married to a non-Christian man. Can I ever get this marriage recognized by the Catholic church?

If you are married according to civil customs, then the Church recognizes that you are married.

However, the Church does not recognize that you have received the sacrament of marriage – as you have not. I do not think you can receive a sacramental marriage without your husband converting to Catholicism, but I would ask a priest about such things.

Were you baptized Catholic at the time of the marriage. If so you will need to have your marriage convalidated? Really there is not enough information to tell you what will need to be done but the short answer is that there is hope. Your next step should be to speak to a priest.

See your priest. He can ask the right questions to clarify the situation and tell you what you will need to do.

Bolding mine… NOT TRUE…

I have a sacramental marriage to a non Catholic.

OP, you do need to talk to your priest about the necessary steps to validate your marriage within the church.

Marriage as a sacrament can exist only between two baptized persons. Therefore, if either or both persons are not baptized then their marriage is not a sacrament. That doesn’t mean that it’s invalid. It’s just not a sacrament. Your husband doesn’t have to convert to Catholicism for your marriage to be sacramental, he just has to be baptized.

Canon 1055 states:Can. 1055 §1. The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring, has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized.
§2. For this reason, a valid matrimonial contract cannot exist between the baptized without it being by that fact a sacrament.

Sacramental = both parties validly baptized

So, if the spouse has never been baptized, the Catholic and non-Christian may request permission to marry and if granted they may have a valid marriage. It will not be Sacramental until the other spouse becomes a Christian.

My husband and I were married in theCatholic Church. At the time he was not( has since converted:))Catholic

Please go see your priest. There are too many variables to discuss here including your baptismal status, your husband’s status, whether or not there were any previous marriages for either of you, etc.

There have already been a number of statements on here that are either misleading or false.

My wife has never be baptized. so you are saying that my marriage in not valid? and what is the difference between valid and Sacramental? Also did not know that I had to have permission from the church to marry outside my faith.(born and raised catholic). I think I have a problem. can’t talk to a priest because I am not in any parish at this time. Been thing about coming back, but…

Your marriage is valid assuming you received the proper dispensations but not Sacramental. Should she ever “take the plunge” and become baptized then your marriage would become Sacramental. This is because the couple confers the Sacrament on each other - and non-baptized persons cannot confer Sacrament.

excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by proper dispensations? Just wondering because my wife and I have will be married 24 years in June. Are you saying that I still need to get the church’s ok? or have I been living in sin for almost 24 years. She was has married once before. This is my first and only marriage. Don’t mean to sound stupid, just wondering.

i thought canon law says a catholic can marry a non catholic and count as a sacrament as long as the non catholic is baptized as a christian. she clearly said NON CHRISTIAN not non catholic. i would still ask your parish/ priest. Good Luck.

come back home fellow catholic. it’s never too late to come back. and no one said it wasnt vaild just not as a sacrament. also not to question your wife but wouldnt you want her to be baptized? my DH cousin is also married to a non catholic, her mother is lutheran but somehow never baptized her so she’s not baptized, my dh cousin and her got married at our parish, which by the way they dont even go there but thats besides the point, so even if the preist let them get married there, the marriage is still not a sacrament, it’s vaild.

OK, first things first. If you are a Catholic you are expected to get married in the proper form which means in the Catholic Church to someone who is a baptized. I apologize I got your case mixed up with another thread who is married to a non-Christian. When you go through your pre-marriage counseling any permissions you need are taken care of as part of that counseling. If you don’t do this it is something that needs to be corrected later which one can do by seeing their priest and going through either convalidation or radical sanitation.

Now, you mentioned your wife was married once before. Is she widowed or divorced. If she is divorced there may be an issue of her being free to marry in the Catholic Church. There is not enough information to know on the internet and you will need to see your priest about all of this.

Now, the important question - sinning. One does not commit mortal sin that they had no knowledge of. Go see your priest. Your priest would be the one at the parish closest to you and he will be happy to make the time to see you. Heaven rejoices more for the return of one sinner than the retention of 99. (yes, I completely misquoted that but you have my point.) It is complicated but God bless you. YOu seem to love your wife very much.

Also not true… as my spouse has not been baptized. I rec’d all the necessary dispensation, and I’m 1)married in the Catholic Church and 2) Hold a HOLY SACRAMENT of MARRIAGE certificate.

I’ve also confirmed all of this as valid with my priest, whom I’ve know for nearly 40 years, who also works in the same location as our Bishop…

So, unless I’m NOT dealing with a lot of life time Catholics, who are considered experts in their field, I’m gonna go with what they’ve informed me to be accurate.

thank you for the reply. My wife was married for about six month to a drunked, drug abuser, wife abuser. She has a scar on her back where he knifed her. after the divorce, he said that if he can’t have her, no one would. she is in fear of her life. We did not get married in the catholic church. we were married in a lutheran church. When we inquired about an annullment, the church said that they need to interview him. She did not want to let him know where she was for fear of him comming back and killing her. the church said that was not their problem and this was the way things were done. so we did not get the annullment. talking to a priest is hard at best as I am deaf. do not sigh and only lip read. still miss things. she is my ears. can’t go to confession as writing it is not allowed according to the church. cannot have any written records, i guess. I can understand now why deaf people have the hardest time with their faith.

I am sorry that you are upset.

Someone else has posted the Canons.

A validly baptized Catholic and a non-baptized person may enter a perfectly valid marriage in the Catholic Church, they get the proper permissions from the Bishop and go through all the pre-marital counseling with the Priest and get married. They give a certificate - what is printed on that certificate is not the official document so it may have some language on it that is not correct (likely the parish only buys one sort of certificate for printing), the official documentation exists in the Marriage Register at the Parish were you were married.

IF your spouse has never been baptized you have a valid, natural marriage.

When that spouse decides to be baptized your marriage will become Sacramental.

IF your spouse was baptized - Baptist or Methodist or Lutheran or some other valid baptism - you would have produced his/her baptismal certificate during the pre-marriage paperwork - then your marriage is Sacramental.

Please, contact your Diocese, they will find someone who can help you in spite of your disability, who can help you come home to the Church.

I will do further research… I’m reading the canon right now. I will also talk with my priest again.

I’m not upset. I’m going by what I was told by experts.
