Martyred Polish priest beatified at Mass in Warsaw in front of 140,000

WARSAW, Poland (CNS) – A martyred Polish priest was praised for standing against the oppressive forces of communism when he defended human rights in his sermons during a beatification Mass in the Polish capital.

More than 140,000 people listened intently during the June 6 ceremony in Pilsudski Square as Archbishop Angelo Amato, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Saints’ Causes, recalled how Father Jerzy Popieluszko “did not yield to temptation to survive in this death camp” under communist rule.

Being very proud of my Polish heritage, I would be extremely happy for this very brave priest and the people of Poland.
 
This man was truly a hero and gave a great witness to his faith, regardless of what could (and did) happen to him. I read a book about him called “The Priest and the Policeman” by John Moody that gave very good insight into Father Popieluszko’s life and times. Towards the end of his life when he was being followed by Communist agents he was very fearful as anyone would be, but didn’t let that keep him from his role as an inspiration for his people.
The article says this:
“What was the reason for this great crime? Was Father Jerzy perhaps a criminal, a murderer or a terrorist?” the prefect told the thousands at the Mass.

“Far from being any of these, Father Popieluszko was simply a faithful Catholic priest, who upheld his dignity as a servant of Christ and the church, and the freedom of those who, like him, were victimized and humiliated,” Archbishop Amato said. “But religion, the Gospel, human dignity and freedom were not concepts which suited Marxist ideology. This was why the destructive hatred of the great liar and enemy of God was unleashed against him.”

People today would do well to study the evils of Communism instead of supporting regimes that promote this way of thinking.
I had to learn how to say his name: popeyooshko.😉
 
I remember when he was murdered in 1984. Horrible things were done to him!

Blessed Jerzy, pray for us, and especially pray for all priests, that they will have the same courage you had!

Thanks for clarifying that.I was remembering the pronunciation in the book and that was as close as I could get! My grandfather was from Poland and my Dad could speak Polish too, but all I know how to say is Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. And I probably don’t say that correctly either!
