Mary (as Queen Mother) always gets her requests?

I’ve heard this said as an ABSOLUTE, based on scripture in OT.

But, not so !! Read 1 Kings 2:13-25…where Bathsheba (Queen Mother) comes to King Solomon, asking petition for Adonijah, …but the King REFUSED her, and had Adonijah killed !!!

So, what are to make of this …except that Christ always has the last word !! Mary can ask, but she won’t always get her wish with Jesus…as we already see in New Testament, where she comes to Jesus with request to have a word with him, and HE DECLINED her.

Nobody ever said that all of Mary’s requests are granted, that I ever heard, unless you take it that she’s so at one with Christ in her will, as a saint in Heaven, that she never prays for anything that God doesn’t will and willingly grant. Which is actually something that a good many theological folks think about all the saints in Heaven, because you wouldn’t be with God and having the beatific vision without having your will perfectly aligned to His.

Now, when Mary was on earth, it’s pretty clear that Jesus took her requests into strong consideration (much as Solomon did with Bathsheba’s request, because indeed the Queen Mother was his most influential counselor) but didn’t always go along with them, because of the whole Finding in the Temple thing. You can’t tell me that neither of his parents bothered to tell Him not to get lost, or that Jesus was unaware of their wishes. He just had business that conflicted with their wishes, and God’s plan trumps human obedience.

However, seeing as Mary pondered the whole thing in her heart instead of giving Jesus a swat and a grounding for life, I think it’s pretty clear that even on earth, her will was closely aligned to God’s. And indeed Jesus later pays her the tribute of saying that everyone who obeys God’s Word is His Mother. 🙂

Well, the discovery of this in scripture won’t cause me not to thank Mary often, and especially at that last hour, when WE ALL WANT HER PRAYERS !!

But, I think this should remind us that ultimately…it is Christ the King who decides.

Pray first to Christ, then Mary & our Patron Saints …
IMO, based on Scripture & Tradition.

Bathsheba, as queen mother at the right hand of the son of David, foreshadows the coming of Mary. God’s purpose in this foreshadowing is to create an anticipation for something much greater. So God orchestrated these events in such a way that Bathsheba’s intercession would fail–she couldn’t arrange the marriage Adonijah wanted and she couldn’t keep him from being put to death by the king.

So the people of that day not only had to await the Messiah who was destined to inherit the throne of David. (Is 9:7) They also had to await the one for whom a place would be reserved on his right. (Ps 45:6,9; Mt 20:23)

With the birth of Mary, the human race finally has something greater than Bathsheba–that is, the long-awaited one whose intercession does not fail.

At the wedding at Cana, our Lord pointed out the audacity of her request: She was asking that the Father’s plan for when Jesus would make himself known as the Messiah be altered. Despite this, He ultimately performed the miracle she was asking for.

Yes, we might say Mary didn’t always get her requests down here …but, in Heaven, where all things are NEW …she very well may !!!

I hope it would be obvious that Jesus is Lord and Saviour and Mary is human, and that the Lord, being divine ultimately decides how a prayer will be granted. So I’m not sure what the point of this post is? Comes of as kinda snarky and disrespectful to me. I hope that wasn’t intentional on your part. Also, it’s important to remember that your Scripture passages are in the realm of Earth, while Jesus and Mary now dwell in the realm of Heaven where we are all perfected before entering. This means that the chances of Mary and the Saints making requests that go against the Will of God are pretty much zero. They will present our petitions if we ask and OUR requests may very well be not in keeping with God’s Will.

Your last line … yes,

If our prayers to Christ, via Queen Mary, don’t get answered …we shouldn’t blame Mary … its because we asked wrongly !

In regard to the bolded…I HAVE heard people say this - and right here on CAF too. Comments like “Jesus can’t say no to His mother”…basically suggesting that if you can just get Mary to intercede for you…it’s a done deal.

That said though I agree with the rest of your post. Mary asks, but God grants what he will. So whether one asks God directly or asks Mary to ask God…the result will be according to God’s Will.

To the OP…Interesting reference. Thanks for sharing.

If we request something from Our Lady and she knows that it is in opposition to God’s will, we will not receive it, but hopefully something better, different that is good for our souls.

Mary’s will is one with God’s will, She never asks anything contrary to His will.

Jesus still maintains his submissiveness to His Holy Mother, Because glory does not destroy nature, but rather perfects it. Simply because He wills it, That being said Mary does not command Him as if He is below Her, Her will is always united to His, hence He takes Her humble prayers as commands from His Loving Mother.

Are you sure about this ? …the submissive part .

Lets recall Mary’s actual words… " Do whatever he tells you "…

…not, “whatever I ask of him for you”

The oft-reference to Mary being the Queen of Heaven was because in the OT the Queen was the mother of the King. That is as far as that title is concerned.

Asking in prayer is not the same as prayer granted but rather prayer heard. But please do not quote Mt 7:7 ;). Prayer is granted usually if it in accordance with the will of God. We can ask though and even if it is not given exactly as what we want, God will always listen and perhaps lead us to another alternative that is good for us.

Mary is an intercessor and being the Queen, hehe, one can imagine the influence of her lobby to the King.

Many great Posts above…This is a wonderful thread for sorting out one of the sometimes problematic issues people have in understanding the heavenly relationship.

The Unity of Will in heaven means that everyone seeks only the greatest Good for us here on earth. To this extent it does not matter who one prays to. Whether one prays to the Father directly or to Jesus our King…or whether one chooses to go through our Lady or another of the saints…the end result remains the same.
There can be no “manipulation” of the heavenly will by individuals therein.

The particular benefit that we may derive from intercessory prayer is more in how the intercessor might help us to better grasp that which God wills for us. If we are close to a given saint, or petition that saint for their particular patronage, our desire to imitate them or ask help in a given situation allows them to help guide us to what God wants for us.

As the C.S. Lewis Character said in the movie “Shadowlands”, “Prayer does not change God, it changes me” (Paraphrased).

I’ve heard fellow Catholics say this too. If circumstances permit, I try to charitably correct them. I’ve also heard Catholics say that you HAVE to make the deMontfort Consecration and that you can ONLY go through Mary. Then there’s the mistaken idea that the Brown Scapular is your guarantee to Heaven. I correct all these errors when able. One thing that shocked me when I joined the Church is how many Catholics don’t know their Faith especially in our modern age where most are literate and have access to a wealth of good solid information.

Great post friend and brings on a very interesting question.

I have often pondered on how exactly did the Blessed Mother correct Christ as a child. How would one tell God to stand in the corner? 😛 I’m sure that is not how it really went, but it is very interesting to think about the Mother/Son relationship they had. The Wedding Feast is a wonderful example of their relationship. Mother told Christ to supply more wine, he told her it wasn’t his time and yet he still created the wine for the wedding feast. Then as you pointed out, she requested an audience with Him and he declined.

As other posters stated, we can offer our request to Her and she can places them before God, but in the end it is God who decides when and where. My grandmother was one that thought Christ had to listen to Holy Mother always. I stated to her that She may be the Mother of God, but he IS God.

Thanks for the post!

It is a shame how many cradle Catholics are lacking in basic understanding of their Faith. It is responsible for so much loss of Faith. However, those who are steadfast in their faith, however imperfectly known, will be saved, Isaiah 35:8

[BibleDRB]Is 35:8[/bibledrb]

But keep correcting them charitably, SOMEONE has to do it! 🙂

This is sublime. Thank you.

When we ask Mary to intercede for us we have to understand that our requests may be faulty or we may ask from self-serving motives. This is where Mary removes such intentions and presents our requests according to God’s will, not our own. If we ask her intercession thinking she’s got to “come through” for us, we are asking for the wrong reasons. But being all merciful and not our judge, Mary takes the “sting” of our selfish motives out of our prayers. It’s like a child wishing to present home made cookies to her father through/with her mother’s help so those cookies will be edible/acceptable.

Wow! Where do you get this? Jesus is submissive to His mother?!? Scripture says that every knee in Heaven, Hell or Earth will one day bend to Jesus. He submits to no one. He is our Lord and King.
