“Mary, did you know … ?”

Of course she knew. She wasn’t an idiot.
The head-patting condescension is also not a tone in which I would address my own mother, let alone the Mother of God. I might address a small child or a disabled person in those kind of condescending tones, if I were tired and not thinking straight.
Your response is an indication that you really don’t know the song, or the point of view from which Mark Lowry wrote it. That’s okay; when it comes to music, not knowing is not a fatal error.

“MDYK” is one of my favorite modern Christmas songs, but I agree that it does not belong in the liturgy. Fortunately, our parish music minister would not use it.

Besides whether we like this song, or their production of it, I love their work.

Here’s one that is maybe less controversial. Maybe we can like the group without liking their doing that song. I can’t believe the way that one guy does all the percussion with his mouth.

Evolution of Music: Pentatonix

I just wish that girl would brush her hair off to the side or something. Or tie it back. Cut it off. Anything but what it’s doing now.

Mark Lowry, who wrote the song, is a Christian comedian and a protestant. Therefore he probably doesn’t hold the same Catholic doctrine as you all do with regards to Mary., though he obviously holds her in high esteem.

really good… here’s one that has both Pentatonix and Lindsey youtube.com/watch?v=aE2GCa-_nyU this is a more pop music… the link to O’Emmanuel in my sig is one that features Lindsey.
Currently two of my current favorite groups.

and she pulls her hair back here (^_^)

Yes it looks like she’s trying out a couple different looks. She’s got some of the pirate eye thing going on here, and sunglasses there. That is her at the end talking, right? That was nice because I got the “ordinary human” thing going. Maybe it’s just that I’m attracted to her smile; it reminds me a bit of one of my daughter’s happy friends who can bring joy to almost any situation.

Still though I wish modern (as in the last 40 years) would quit flicking scenes and moving the camera so fast that I can’t get oriented on any given instant. First it’s like “stop one second so I can see this before you switch it again,” and then like “ah forget it.”

I think I have only heard the song once but I found it moving. I also found that it connected with the Protestants as well as the non-religious in the crowd. It seemed to emphasize her simple humanity and willingness to choose to answer God’s call. Hearing it sung by a girl I’ve seen grow up as a final solo, at a Christmas celebration at our local public school was a blessing.

As Christians I think we might try to view our neighbor’s artistic efforts with charity before deciding we know their minds and intentions.

Enjoy the music you love.

Happy Advent
