Her birth is mentioned in the Qur’an:

[Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of 'Imran said: “My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are The Hearing, The Knowing.”

But when she delivered here, she said: “My Lord! I have delivered a female.” And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, and the male is not like the female. "And I havfe named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah.]

So her Lord accepted her witih good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found, with her, provision. He said, “O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?” She said, “It is form Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.”

Chapter 3:35-37

While it is good that muslims have a respect for Mary and Jesus, and they do have great respect for them, I would not put much stock in the information relayed about them in Islam. I have had a muslim I work with explain to me how Jesus was conceived and gestated in Mary’s calf. I don’t know if this is widespread belief among muslims about Mary and Jesus or if it is just the local imam’s way of explaining to the people how a virgin conceived and gave birth. Perhaps someone could enlighten me further on this matter.

Well, I think the question worth asking about such information is where it comes from. In the case of the gestation in the calf, it’s not something I have ever heard of, and it’s probably something someone made up, not at all a teaching of Islam.

For something to be a valid teaching of Islam, it would have to be something which appears in the Qur’an (like what I quoted above) or in an authentic narration from Muhammad. People say that Islam teaches this that and the other all the time, but the question is if they can really prove it in Islamic sources, and quite often they can’t.

But what I find interesting here is that the Qur’an talks about the birth of Mary. Of course later it talks about the birth of Jesus as well, but where do non-Muslims think this story comes from? Do Catholics think it’s true or even possibly true? And if so, where do they think it came from?

Of course asking the source of the information would be good, but most likely it comes from the imams since the men i work with here are essentially illiterate and therefore cannot read and interpret the Quran for themselves. They are totally reliant on their clerics for religious instruction. In this case I preferred not to offend him by correcting him, as he was mainly happy to show me he knew something about a figure important in my religion when he saw a picture of the Holy Virgin on my desk. I figured he knew the important parts (Immaculate conception of Mary, Virgin birth of Jesus and that she remained a virgin), the mechanics were therefore irrelevant to the situation. If I erred, I would like to think I erred on the side of courtesy.

Hi

I appreciate your post.

Quran is based on the Word Revealed on the heart of Muhammad by GodAllahYHWH covering all three periods, past, present and future; this one is from the Past.

The Holy Quran : Chapter 75: Al-Qiyamah

[75:17] Move not thy tongue, O Prophet, with the revelation of the Qur’an that thou mayest hasten to preserve it.
[75:18] Surely, upon US rests its collection and its recital.
[75:19] So when We recite it, then follow thou its recital.
[75:20] Then upon US rests the expounding thereof.

So, it is all revealed by GodAllahYHWH.

Thanks

I have wondered about this as well. The names given of Mary’s family are different than the ones that we have been taught.

Why does it matter what Muslims think about the Mother of God?

They deny the most august title of Mother of God/Theotokos to her, so any praise they have for her will pale in comparison to proper Christian veneration.

More accurately she was a woman of Amram, father to Moses and Aaron, meaning she was Levite like her cousin Elizabeth.

Mahometans talk about entities they call “Jesus” and “Mary”, but they are manifestly NOT the real Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, nor His holy Virgin Mother Mary.

The very fact the Koran does give the right name for the Virgin Mary’s father should tell you something.

They also deny that the real Jesus died on the cross. That way they don’t have to deal with the Resurrection or Ascension.

I confess there is no God but Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that Jesus is God Incarnate, and that Maryam bas Joachim is Theotokos!

Well, I was always taught that her parents were Anne and Joachim.

Historically, weren’t the only tribes left intact after Babylon the tribes of Benjamin and Juda?

No, John the Baptist was a Levite, his father was a priest in the Temple.

Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

So Mary’s family is most closely linked to Levites in the Bible, and also the Quran.

Basically mohammed made it all up. They say he was given this word from an angel called Gabriel. But, that angel and/or allah kept changing their minds on things. That is why we have the Medina version (the violent passages) abrogating the older Meccan (peaceful passages).

Quite often mohammed would think up something new so he could get away with something. For example, he lusted after his stepson’s wife - so he made up a surah that said he can have her because allah told him it was ok.

What he has written in the koran is to say that Christians and Jews have changed the Bible and if muslims change it - they will be condemned. And since he was an illiterate, and might have heard the stories (but obviously either made up things or remembered them wrong) he said his versions were the true versions from allah.

sura 15 (Rock City) goes over this about the Christians and Jews changing the Bible and if the muslims change the koran they will be condemned.

This is why the only ones who hope that islam will change are us - the muslims take the koran as the word of allah through mohammed and won’t change it for fear of going to hades. And the jihadists that use the koran as their reasons to kill us - well, they are not distorting the koran - it does say that.

Shirk is worse for a muslim than killing kufir (us infidels). sura 6 verses 1-83.

mohammed had a desire to convert the Jews and Christians of his time. This is why he threw in the Bible stories. They laughed at him because they were so screwed up and probably for other reasons too. Well, this bothered mohammed a great deal and eventually he started his battles and killing/enslavement/torture/theft/rape/etc against non-muslims. He found he could get a lot of stuff, slaves, and converts by doing this. He basically wiped those out who made him mad.

So, back to Mary. The stories in the koran are made up. I don’t know by whom - whether it was mohammed or one of his followers after he died and who compiled the koran (since mohammed was an illiterate - he did not take notes but left it to his scribes).

The Qur’an does not give the names of either of her parents, really. One translation (the one I typed out) says “wife of Imran” but others say “woman of Imran” because the word used can mean either. (To be particular, the word means “woman” and is sometimes used as “wife.”) That aside, her parents aren’t named at all in the Qur’an.

I understand Catholics do not base their teachings about Mary and the immaculate conception entirely on scripture–if I am wrong about that, please correct me.

It only makes sense for Muslims to reject a title for any human like “mother of God.” God is not created, while men (and women) are creations. Therefore it is not fitting to the glory of God that He would have a mother.

For anyone who thinks that the passage is not talking about Mary–who do you think is being referred to? (As Mary, of course). And also, where do you think the story came from?

Under Islam, the Holy Mother would be forced to wear a veil and stay indoors 24/7, or risk being beaten.

Mary is the most honored woman in Islam, how does it make sense that she would be forced to do anything? Besides, the Qur’an describes her many times as being devoutly obedient and righteous, pure and chaste.

In fact, I have a very odd question turning in my mind right now.

Is the honor of Mary that she gave birth to Jesus…

Or is the honor of Jesus that his mother was Mary?

Hmmmmmmm.

The Qur’an gives the impression that the latter is more true. Mary is never called, in the Qur’an, the mother of Jesus. However, Jesus is almost always referred to as the son of Mary.

**The honor of Jesus is that He is God Incarnate.

And He Himself said the honor of His Mother is that she heard the Word of God and kept it!**

They call Jesus the Son of Mary because they want to dispel that idea that Jesus was the Son of God. They ensure that He is put in proper context by saying He was a human born of a human mother.

They also think we are polytheists for thinking that Christ was God’s Son.

Go figure why if they are so honored by Christ and Mary that they slaughter so many Christians, or even Jews. I won’t go into how many Hindus and Buddhists they have slaughtered. They completely wiped out the Zorastrians.

I know that John’s father was a priest. I was mentioning that according to history, the tribes were more or less destroyed, and those who filled the Levitical roles claimed them. I was incorrect about the “when.” The Assyrians took away the other ten, then the Babylonians took the rest off. Please look at this link.

Basically, the idea that there were “true” Levites left is not historically accurate.

What does Mary have to do with polytheism or slaughter? No need to change the topic, I’m sure all those other issues have been hashed out many times. Let’s talk about Mary. 😃

What are Christian sources which describe the birth of Mary?

The father of John the Baptist of course was Zechariah, and this is mentioned in the Qur’an as well. In the Qur’anic account, after Zechariah sees what a righteous child Mary is and how she is blessed, he wants a child of his own though his wife has been barren. So he asks Allah, and is told that he will have a son, even though his wife has been barren and he is old–because this is easy for the Creator! And his sign is that he goes mute for 3 days.

This is in Chapter 3, 38-41–I summarised it rather than typing or pasting this time.

Someone said on the last page that the story about Mary’s birth was made up. If that were true, then where does the story of Zechariah come from?
