As a former United Methodist pastor I can tell you with absolute confidence that heresies of all sorts are officially and popularly believed throughout Protestantism. They are deeply held and piously taught. It isn’t that all Protestants are evil. It isn’t even that all Catholics are devoid of these errors, though the Catholics who hold to them are in danger and have effectively excommunicated themselves. Errors have crept in precisely because many are slothful. In fact most of us are slothful from time to time and need correction. We don’t like correction because we are often prideful. The devil has tricked many of us and tries to trick all of us.
If you listen to protestants or even many of our Catholic bretheren long enough and if we are attentive enough to the teachings of the Church we will detect Arianism, Gnosticism, Nestorianism, and all manner of other heresies.
The denial of the title “Theotokos” (Mother of God) to Mary is a heresy condemned by the Church and rightly condemned. The heresy is indeed called “Nestorianism”. I belive Nestorius was sincere. He fought against the heresy of Arianism valiantly but fell into the error of denying that Mary is the Mother of God. The Church understood rightly that by doing this he was inadvertantly I believe denying the eternal God nature of Jesus Christ.
I pray for all the Protestants who have fallen into this heresy and for all Cahtolics who have unwittingly fallen for this error. One cannot deny the eternal divinity and eternal humanity of Jesus and really be a faithful Christian. God can cleanse that error from a sincere heart and mind. He can do it in Purgatory but why not let Him cleanse you now?
