Mary is only an incubator

Speak to him again - make an appointment to speak in person, not right after Mass. Ask him to explain what he said about Mary because you are confused and shocked by it. Then after that conversation, if he says the same things again, document it for the bishop. Ask him to clear up the confusion for you.

YoungTradCatholic is right to say use facts, not feelings. State only what you asked and what his responses are. It doesn’t matter if you are in CA or anywhere else. And it isn’t helpful to say that he is being protestant.

The impression he is giving is wrong and should be corrected, but the best way of doing that is by being straightforward and charitable and not cloud the issue with extraneous opinions.
This is probably the best approach.

My Parish Priest removed our picture of Mary and the votive candles that were in place for prayer and veneration. I recently asked if he had ever considered giving a Primer in Marian Theology to our parish. He seemed almost insulted. he actually said that Mary was only an incubator!!! He firmly said that he was a “Priest of the Trinity ONLY” and that Jesus was the ONLY mediator. Period. End of discussion. I was shocked, especially since our Parish is in the heart of the California Missions! I don’t understand how a Catholic priest can be ordained that has this view of the Mother of God! His position seems Protestant to me! Is his position heretical or is this a pastoral problem or both.

Concerned in California!
I don’t think that even a non denominational evangelical Christian (with anti-Catholic views) would show that little respect for the mother of our Lord!

I think your priest needs to spend a little more time with his Bible in prayer!!!

**"In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:26-28)
**
**"And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the child leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you are among woman, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:41-43)
**
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold all generations will call me blessed…” (Luke 1:46-48)

’So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of the skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him…’
'When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman behold your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:17-18, 26-27)

How could any Christian (let alone a Catholic priest!) after praying over these scriptures refer to Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ as “only an incubator?” 🤷😦
Shame on him!

It might be illuminating to ask this priest:

"If the Holy Mother of God, (chosen and sanctified by the Trinity to have the most intimate relationship with God in human history*) can be referred to as “only an incubator …”

… what is a freewheeling priest “only” … that any should listen to HIM?
  • optional long version in parenthesis.
The point being … what would he say if one should tell him " Who are you to pretend to authority and honor here? I am child of God ONLY!"

He’d either have to stop speaking with such authority or emphasize it. There is much in scripture to emphasize honoring those in authority over us (including the Church) provided they do not command us in ways that are opposed to God or His law. Still, this sounded like an attack upon an approved devotion, so … would a defense like this have been in line?

“AH … but WHOM was she incubating? And WHAT are you “in sin” - uating?” - nah, think it but don’t say it.

Mary has always been a keystone in my spiritual life as a Catholic. I pray the rosary and recieve reassurance from her loving intercession on our behalf. Her faith bolsters mine! I feel as if our pastor has removed a critical member of the holy family from our church. I will speak in private with some fellow parishoners and see if they feel as I do. Then we may write a respectful letter to the Bishop.
