Mary MacKillop excommunicated over report of abuse: documentary

Blessed Mary Mckillop is due to be canonized in two weeks. However, a documentary which will air on Australian television on 10/10 claims that she had been excommunicated for several months for accusing a priest of committing child sexual abuse.
In response to the claims, the Sisters of St Joseph said in a statement: "Mary MacKillop’s excommunication from the church, for a period of five months from September 1871, is an event that has been comprehensively documented.

“There were several factors that led to this painful period for Mary and the sisters. The reasons for Mary’s excommunication have been written about and commented on in the public domain since that time. This is consistent with the information contained in the Compass program.”

If you read the accounts carefully you will see that Mary MacKillop was not excommunicated as a direct result of reporting an abusive priest. She was excommunicated for ‘inciting disobedience’, a charge that was basically trumped up by a colleague of the abusive priest, angered that she had reported his friend to her superiors. Fr Charles Horan had considerable influence with the bishop, Lawrence Sheil and succeeded, through lies and innuendo, in a character assassination of Mary MacKillop.

What eventually happened to the “abusive priest” and the bishop who excommunicated the woman? How were they disiplined?

The abusive priest was returned to Ireland…no further comment necessary 😦

Mary McKillop was ‘excommunicated’ in September 1871: Bishop Sheil died the following March but not before lifting the excommunication.
 
Big surprise there. If only she could’ve imagined how much worse it would be 100 years later.
