The woman of Revelation 12 bore a Child who was to rule the nations (Gentiles) with a rod of iron. Read Psalm 2. You see David write of the “anointed” (Messiah) who will rule with a rod of iron. In Revelation 11, John writes about seeing the Ark of the Covenant (which was lost, but is now seen) in heaven, but suddenly stops and writes of the woman who is to bear that prophesied child. The Queen is the mother of the King. The ark of the New Covenant. It is a matter of connecting the dots.

Now, as to the false queen of heaven (idol), scripture also speaks of false gods. Does this render the God of Israel also false? Nonsense! And, all of the anti-Catholic stuff you hear is likewise nonsense. It was all made up to justify division, but Christ never justified division in His Body.

As the new Ark of the Covenant, Mary is our Virgin Queen. We read in Ezekiel 44 with respect to the restoration of the priesthood in anticipation of Christ’s eternal priesthood:

Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east, and it was shut. 2 The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it. It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. 3 The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.”

And in Hebrews 9 which speaks of the earthly and heavenly sanctuaries:

11 But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), 12 he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

It was in the sacred sanctuary, the Holy of Holies, of the Temple where the High Priest offered up a sacrifice in expiation for the sins of the people once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Mary’s sacred womb is a type of the heavenly sanctuary or Holy of Holies in which our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizadek entered and left once for all to offer up his own blood for the sins of humanity. In the heavenly sanctuary, he continues to offer his blood to the Father in expiation for our sins as the mediator of the New Covenant. Just as the High Priest was the only person allowed to enter the sacred sanctuary, that being only once a year. So, too, no person other than Jesus should enter the sacred sanctuary of his mother’s womb and the heavenly sanctuary once for all.

I have seen Evangelicals who were shocked to learn that in Luke 1, Elizabeth indicated to Mary, “blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb”.

Additionally, regarding Revelation 12, they believe that the “woman” is the nation of Israel.

So, as John Martignoni put it - we have Michael the Archangel, the dragon/Satan, the child to rule all nations, and the woman with a crown of twelve stars. Person, Person, Person, Person? Or - Person, Person, Person, and a country?

I thank Fr. Mitch Pacwa for that. If we must generalize, Catholics know less about more of the bible while “bible Christians” know more about less of the bible. They must overlook those passages which conflict with their biased and, frankly, shallow theology.

How can John in Revelation stop in one sentence writing about the Ark of the Covenant (1 mention), then immediately write not of a nation (22 mentions), not of a Church (19 mentions), but of a woman? A woman who fled to Egypt with that Child, thus fulfilling “Out of Egypt I have called my Son” (Mat 2:15)

The symbolism in the Apocalypse is polyvalent, meaning it can relate to more than one person or object. The woman in Revelation 12 can represent Israel, the Church, and Mary from different perspectives. Daughter Zion is a type of Mary, as is the Church, by having brought forth the Saviour. The crown of twelve stars represents the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles on whom Christ founded his Church. As the mother of our Lord, Mary stands at the centre because of her participation in the hypostatic order of Christ’s incarnation.

I’m sure he did, seeing how strongly devoted he was to our Blessed Lady. But what he affirmed wasn’t a dogmatic definition of faith.

Yes, the woman with the crown of twelve stars on her head gives birth to a male child who will rule the nations with a rod of justice (cf. Lk 1:31-33, 35). After he ascends to his throne in heaven, the dragon makes war with the woman and all her other children- those who bear witness to Jesus and obey God’s commandments (Rev 12:17).

John’s visions are timeless as in a dream state and multi-dimensional. The visions in Chapter 12, therefore, coalesce with each other in such a way that there are no fixed identities which disclude others, and divine truths are assimilated as elements of one whole. A single vision can have more than one meaning because of how closely connected the objects in it are. Nor do the events in a comprised series of visions necessarily occur in sequential order as historical events in time do. We read that the woman was given two wings of an eagle so that she could flee from the dragon and escape from the flood waters by flying off to the wilderness where she was to be nourished and prepared by God. This happens after her son is snatched up to God and taken to his throne (Ascension), but what happens to the woman before then can signify her immaculate conception. Mary received this singular grace (wings of an eagle) to prepare her for being the Mother of God. She escaped the clutches of the dragon when God put enmity between her and the serpent (Gen 3:15). The flood waters that destroyed sinful humanity in the time of Noah could not reach her, for she was preserved free from all stain of sin. The wilderness was Mary’s spiritual haven and place of refuge where no worldly allurements and idols could come between her and God. Her soul was an isolated and unspoilt place untouched by the effects of original sin that plague humanity and alienate it from God.

It was in the desert where God prepared his chosen people to enter the promised land after He removed them from all the pagan influences in Egypt and the moral vacuum they were caught up in there so He could renew His ever-present covenant with them at Sinai. The crossing of the Red Sea was a type of baptism for the Israelites, a rite of initiation and a form of transit from an ungodly world, whereas Pharaoh’s army and chariots (the serpent’s offspring) were engulfed by the flood waters of the sea.
