…“Possess my soul. Take over my entire personality and life.
Replace it with yourself.”…

– Pope John Paul II
Linkowski, I understand your concern and confusion. Of course you are confused because you are not Catholic. However, once you really …I mean really really, understand **the spirit behind the Catholic devotion to Mary **, the words “possess my soul” in the John Paul II’s prayer become clearer.

Let’s put it this way: when you were young, and you wanted to ask your dad something. Many times, you can go and ask him directly and he would give you an answers. Some other time, you don’t want to ask him but you ask your mom to ask him.

Now, when you ask your mom to ask your dad a favor, shouldn’t you trust your mom and let her do all the talking to your dad?

“Possess my soul” means just that - Besides asking God, we can surely ask the Virgin Mary to ask for us. When we ask her for any favor, we trust her wholeheartedly that she would interceed for us. “Possessing my soul” could be “I leave it up to you, here I am. Help me!”

Again, if you take sometime and know the Catholic faith, you will then understand all our prayers are all about.

I agree with water. Open up your heart and learn about the Catholic faith and why we do all that we do.
This is a very good book if you’re interested. It explains about the Catholic faith, saints, Mary, etc. I am currently reading this book.

It is called United States Catholic Catechism for Adults. There are many many other books out there if you geniunely want to learn about the Catholic faith.

But clearly…the Pope was offering sacrifice of his whole self to her…clearly causes much confusion.
Wouldn’t a reasonable person try to find out the Pope’s perspective on the issue?

Mr. Linkowsli -

Would you really like to know Catholic theology concerning Mary and all the saints, or not?

I will tell you if you are serious.

I guess I do not see any reason here to treat her as the fourth member of the Trinity. I will not look at the websites because I have already seen enough. Look, there were a couple of times that I almost returned to the Catholic Church, but the Marian Theology among other things is just way too out there and unbiblical…like the devotion to Mary as if she can hear…

Idols might be wooden and be different from Mary in this way but Mary cannot hear like the idol either.

Was Mary a good Christian woman who did the will of God (as we all are supposed to) - YES, she was. But not to be adored, sought as a refuge, prayed to with the expectation of ***an answer ***(which I do not ask of my fellow Christians in Chruch), called the Queen of Heaven, the one we surrender our care to in the time of death, etc. This is not right.

By the way - she is blessed and so am I. Also, how long this has been going on has nothing to do with it either.

Is there any veneration of Mary in the book of Revelation while everyone is praising our loving Lamb of God? No, there is not.

Lu 11:27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
Blessed Mary is in heaven, where she can hear me, and can pray for those who she hears if she chooses.

Why should I not ask her help?

You apparently don’t believe she can hear you. That’s your belief.

Do you really think Mary is considered a “4th member of the Trinity” by Catholics?

Do you really think that Mary is treated like an “idol” by Catholics?

Do you REALLY think that Mary, and by extension all those in heaven and purgatory, can’t hear our prayers?

That’s your right, of course, but you miss much by not understanding what Catholics actually do believe, as defined by the Pope/Magisterium.

Prayin’ for 'ya…!

I think Mr. Linkowski has already answered your question quite clearly.

Easy Link! We’re all Christians here, and “they’ll know we are Christians by our love”, right?

If I misunderstood your words, my apologies. But if you think that since you are in Christ, then your way is the ONLY WAY, you may want to step back and study Christ’s teachings on humility, there.
Is it me or is he just lacking any charity here… or just ignore most of the threads concerning Mary?

Whatever Link lacks in charity (and are we all guilty of that at least once or twice on these Forums? Manny?), he does love Jesus (again, as we all do), and deserves our love and patience with him as well.

Heck, even if someone doesn’t love the Lord (:bigyikes:), they still deserve our Love and Compassion!

With all due respect, I would like a “yes” or “no” from Mr. Linkowski.

He may actually have an open enough mind to learn something. I will give him that much credit.

If he loves Jesus he ought to love all His Family to include, Jesus’ mother.

If he loves Jesus he ought to love all His Family to include, Jesus’ mother.
And if WE love Jesus, WE ought to love all His Family.

I can’t control Link. I can only control my own passions and emotions (or at least TRY to control them).

Also, in this prayer, the Pope says…

…“Possess my soul. Take over my entire personality and life.
Replace it with yourself.”…

– Pope John Paul II

If this is not a sacrificing, I am not sure what is…
Asking our Holy Mother to give us her attributes does NOT equal sacrifice. There are plently of prayers…beautiful prayers that Pope John Paul II spoke which I know that you would appreciate…but I believe you seek controversy. I know…I have a book which is of his private prayers, here is one example.

An Offering of the Self
**O Lord,
may my soul be flooded with your light and know you more profoundly!

Lord,
give me so much Love, Love forever serene and generous, that I will be united with you always!

Lord,
Let me serve you, and serve you well, on the pathways that you wish to open to my existance here below!**

This was a wonderful person, and one day soon I will officially be asking for intercession from Pope John Paul II…I hope to have one/fourth of the Faith of John Paul II…Amen…
