Linkowski, I understand your concern and confusion. Of course you are confused because you are not Catholic. However, once you really …I mean really really, understand **the spirit behind the Catholic devotion to Mary **, the words “possess my soul” in the John Paul II’s prayer become clearer.…“Possess my soul. Take over my entire personality and life.
Replace it with yourself.”…
– Pope John Paul II
Let’s put it this way: when you were young, and you wanted to ask your dad something. Many times, you can go and ask him directly and he would give you an answers. Some other time, you don’t want to ask him but you ask your mom to ask him.
Now, when you ask your mom to ask your dad a favor, shouldn’t you trust your mom and let her do all the talking to your dad?
“Possess my soul” means just that - Besides asking God, we can surely ask the Virgin Mary to ask for us. When we ask her for any favor, we trust her wholeheartedly that she would interceed for us. “Possessing my soul” could be “I leave it up to you, here I am. Help me!”
Again, if you take sometime and know the Catholic faith, you will then understand all our prayers are all about.
