Nope, like I said, such an exercise doesnât support your argument. It is not a moniker of Mary. And still, it states absolutely nothing about her being immaculately conceived.Chicken?

Well this sounds unbelieveableâŚIf it sounds to unbelievable, then it probably is.![]()
W.E. Vine is not teaching that either âhighly favoredâ or âendued with Graceâ means Mary was immaculately conceived. That whole doctrine is poured INTO the text by Catholic interpreters. Here are two PROTESTANT linguistic sources in favor of âHail, full of Grace.â
1.An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, by W.E. Vine:
âCharitoo: akin to charis, to endow with charis, primarily signified to make GRACEFUL or GRACIOUS, and came to denote, in Hellenistic Greek, to cause to find favor, Luke 1:28, **âhighly favoredâ ** (margin, âendued with Graceâ)âŚGrace implies more than favor; Grace is a free gift, favor may be deserved or gained.â
âWhich thou hast receivedâ says nothing about Mary being immaculately conceived. That interpretation is completely foreign to the text, nor is Robertson teaching such a doctrine.2.Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament:âHighly favoredâ (kecharitomene). Perfect passive participle of charitoo and means endowed with Grace (charis), enriched with Grace as in Ephesians 1:6âŚThe Vulgate gratiae plena "is right, if it means âfull of Grace which thou hast recievedâ;wrong, if it means âfull of Grace which thou hast to bestow.â "
I donât think Mary gained the right for the Holy Spirit to come upon her either. But the Holy Spirit coming upon her in this context is about her giving birth to the Messiah, not being immaculately conceived. An outlandish and forced interpretation alien to the context.Seems pretty clear to me. The early Church reconized this as well. And are you really trying to say that Mary EARNED the right for the Holy Spirit to come upon her? I very much do not think so. It was because of Godâs Grace.![]()
Youâre trying to confuse two points here, arenât you?W.E. Vine is not teaching that either âhighly favoredâ or âendued with Graceâ means Mary was immaculately conceived. linus,It is not a moniker of Mary.
Sure they can have different opinions, but they all held to what Peter (or his successor) said to be trueâŚand they also warned against doing otherwise.E.E.N.S
Do you suppose the apostles and the early fathers believed in the primacy of Peter? Sure they did. But they all had differences of opinion despite Peter being declared as head of the church. Primacy does not mean infallibility of one individual. Only rank of position.
Iâm not confusing the points at all. Whether one interprets it âfull of graceâ or âhighly favored one,â neither the text nor the context speaks to the immaculate conception of Mary. The idea that the angelâs salutation infers her sinlessness is NOT at all derived from the text but the extra-biblical doctrine being superimposed upon the text by Catholic interpreters. Itâs a desperate attempt by Catholicism to try to make the IC of Mary a Biblical, i.e., divinely revealed. But the attempt utterly fails. The ONLY way we could ever know that Mary was immaculately conceived is by Divine revelation, and thatâs not happening in Lk. 1:28. If youâre going to believe it, it will have to be on the word of men, not Godâs written word. Itâs simply not there!Youâre trying to confuse two points here, arenât you?
- People have been trying to argue that kecharitomene does not mean âFull of Grace.â Vine and other honest protestant scholars confirm with the Catholic and other Churches that id DOES Charis means Grace, everywhere in the New Testament.
- Maryâs sinlessness is endorsed by her being entitled âone full of Graceâ by the angel. Since If one is full of Grace, there can be no place for sin.
Now youâre basing your argument on the word âHail?â Stop, STOP!!! Itâs all too desperate. Can you show me elsewhere in Scripture where âfull of graceâ means immaculately conceived? What in the context causes anyone to interpret that phrase as âimmaculately conceived?â Itâs not even about Maryâs conception, but the One she is to conceive through the power of the Holy Spirit.linus,
I did a word search for âHailâ (Gk: http://www.blueletterbible.org/bg/g...ifhttp://www.blueletterbible.org/bg/gs167.gif - sorry, couldnât reduce the font sizeâŚ) and came up with the following results:
Matthew 26:49
And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
Matthew 27:29
And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Mark 15:18
And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
John 19:3
And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
By your logic, âmasterâ and âKing of the Jewsâ are not monikers? Where are you coming up with this stuff?
Letâs add to this a bit. Whatâs the first thing that angels typically say to humans? âBE NOT AFRAID!â Whatâs the first thing the angel says to Mary? âHAIL!â Notice any difference?
I still think youâre chicken to not name the people who God renamesâŚ
May God bless you and keep you,
RyanL
We know it by Divine revelation! The ONLY way we could ever know that Mary was immaculately conceived is by Divine revelation,
We believe it because the Church says soâŚand everything the Church teaches is in the Bible either explicitly or implicitly. Now youâre basing your argument on the word âHail?â Stop, STOP!!! No, I agree Vine is not saying that Mary is Imaculate and was concieved that way, I was saying that they agree with the words âFull of Grace,â instead of âhighly favored.â But Catholics see this verse as a proof text to the Imaculate Conception from the Holy Spirit. You disagree but so what, all different denominations disagree and interpret the Bible their own way. But stop saying that this verse canât be interpretated the Catholic way just because YOU donât see it that wayW.E. Short question: why donât you call yourself âjusthereticâ?Mary was born after Eve fell into sin and so inherited original sin, as do all of Adamâs posterity.
I agree that JustCatholic is a heretic (or these days one might call him a descenter), but we should not resort to name callingâŚShort question: why donât you call yourself âjusthereticâ?
It would fit much betterâŚ
Catholics have done no such thing as âpoured INTOâ. The Catholic interpreters have taught what was taught by the Church since its inception, even before we had the texts. If anything it was the deformers (and those still following in their footsteps) that did the pouring and emptying to suit their own whimsies and is still being done today proven by the fact of the countless different denominations doing their own interpretation. That whole doctrine is poured INTO the text by Catholic interpreters.
