Maryknoll: Vatican has dismissed Roy Bourgeois from order

You have to keep in mind that the priesthood was once a privileged class in Europe (especially the bishops). Moreover, many of the arguments used to bar women from professions like medicine or the law in medieval times (that women were too emotional, stupid, delicate, sinful, etc.) were also used to justify barring them from the priesthood.

So the Catholic Church’s credibility is compromised when it says that barring women from the priesthood has nothing to do with valuing or respecting men more.
It is certainly true that western civilization (among many others, mind you) has a legacy of contempt for the capabilities of women and attempts to disempower them. This truth is what fueled the anger and the determination to overthrow institutional injustice that has done quite a bit of good in the last 50 years.

Unfortunately, cultural strengths often contain cultural weaknesses. The fatal weakness built into modern feminism is that it has ironically become somewhat mysogynist in its philosophy. Instead of merely fighting to create new opportunities for women, it has joined the old boys club in denigrating the value of motherhood and devotion of one’s life to the raising of a happy, healthy family. Every culture that has adopted modern feminism as a “good” value also has a total fertility rate FAR below basic replacement level. This is a pretty good indicator that there is a problem! This is just ONE of the ways in which this reaction to historical oppression has caused an opposite error of reaction.

Another is the idea that equality of dignity and respect requires eradication of all differences in role in society. This is where feminism derailed and fundamentally misunderstands and mischaracterizes the purpose of the priesthood and the underlying reasons for a male priesthood. They continue to stress an understanding of priesthood as one of power, control, leadership and prestige. ANYbody, male or female, who sees the priesthood that way should never be a priest. It’s beyond the scope of a forum post to really articulate the deeper meaning of the male priesthood, but those interested should more fully read John Paul II’s Theology of the Body to better understand how men and women are different, but both created in the image and likeness of God. The bottom line is that it does NOT advance the wellbeing of women to pretend that there are no differences between us except irrelevant plumbing details.

As for the poster with the revisionist Junia stuff, spare us. No serious scholar really claims that women in the early church received the sacrament of Holy Orders. Discussions of deaconesses and female apostles are simply linguistic attempts at trickery that fail to examine the real context and meaning of the words used.

I find it interesting we will laicize and excommunicate a priest that advocates women’s ordination yet the majority of priests convicted as abusers have neither been laicized nor excommunicated. Same goes for the bishops involved in the coverup. Why has Bishop Finn (who was recently found guilty in a civil court) been allowed to remain as the bishop of his diocese? I guess supporting women’s ordination is a far great crime in the eyes of the church than abusing children. The church is indeed a mess.

Oh no, the media will cover it, but all the coverage will have roughly this tone : “Vatican attempts to silence priest speaking in favor of woman’s equality;” or “Pope strips priest of rank for supporting women,” or maybe even “Priest excommunicated for speaking in favor of woman’s ordination.”

It will all have that typical drawl to it; hateful, spiteful, deriding and completely biased…
Without further ado, I give you Wonkette, the TMZ of the leftist politico world.

I hear you, but I think the difference is that the Church doesn’t teach that child abuse is okay. It is a sin. Those priests sinned greatly. But that makes them sinners like you and I. They can be forgiven sins just like you and I.

On the contrary, this priest is teaching against Church teaching…leading the flock astray. If this priest taught that child abuse (or any other sin) was not a sin and went against Church teaching, I suspect that the Church would take issue with that as well. Likewise, if this priest admitted he was wrong and stopped teaching against Church teaching, he would still be a priest.

I agree with you to a point. Yes the sin can be forgiven but there still needs to be some sort of consequences for their actions. While I’m ambivalent on the ordination issue, I don’t consider challenging that particulate “teaching” on the same level as challenging what I consider core teachings, ie. incarnation, real presence, resurrection, etc. Allowing Finn to remain as bishop and Law to be swept to Rome for a cushy job has done a lot of harm. I hear people say 'Good old boys club".

I wouldn’t mind seeing more too, but wrt to your comments re : this particular teaching vs resurrection, etc…it is dogma. It’s actually up there with the things you have mentioned. Yes, it’s that important…and no priest should be advocating against it.

Edit: Actually, I am wrong about dogma…sorry. I remembered it being listed as dogma somewhere and that list actaully distinguishes between dogma and doctrine. It is doctrine, not dogma. Mea culpa. Having said that, no priest should be teaching against any infallible teaching whether it’s dogma or doctrine.

Whatever one thinks about Roy Bourgeois or the idea of women priests, this is not a happy event for the Church, for Maryknoll, for Roy Bourgeois or for those who love the Church. The dismissal of Roy Bourgeois is sad for so many reasons, as is the dismissal of anyone who has given 45 years of his life to any organization. Whether you feel his dismissal was necessary or not, we should at least say a prayer for him and all concerned. This is a tragedy for all, not a vindication and certainly not a victory.

We need to see more of this…cleaning house so to speak.

But who wants to bet that the media won’t cover this? It only covers Vatican discipline when the Vatican goes after nuns.
That’s because the liberal media wants people to believe that the Catholic Church has a “war on women” which is the opposite of the truth.

on the flip side, those who tremble for Catholic orthodoxy can rest assured. Despite all the hype about upcoming trials and tribulations for true believers I’ve come across in recent times, it appears the ones who actually spend years of their lives in federal prison then get kicked out of the church are priests who do naughty stuff like work for peace and support women’s ordination.

Good! Now let’s start cleaning up some of these orders and societies so we can eliminate much of the confusion for authentic Catholic identity.
I would suggest that “confusion for authentic Catholic identity” also has roots in the absence of church sanctions for bishops involved in abuse cover-ups. That is a scandal far more widespread and visible and hurtful to the Church and its members than anything done by Fr. Bourgeois, whose public profile was far lower.

Rest easy folks, the *Distorter *is on it.

What is sad really are the comments below. If you ever want to get a picture of how poor Catholic catechesis has been or how far even those who keep up with the Faith have fallen, read the comments on these types of articles on this website. Its enlightening to say the least.

Perhaps, though I would suggest the Catholic identity in terms of authenticity has been in the dumps for a long time now, while the abuse scandal is fairly recent in comparison. It has certainly not helped anything, but I’m not sure what the earlier poster was referring to can be traced to that situation.

Just a thought.

Nope, the abuse cover-ups just gave cafeteria catholics a better excuse for their confusion. They already took issue with some of the Church’s teachings (contraception, abortion, gay marriage, female priests, etcetc). Now they can point to the abuse and the cover-ups to prove that they were right and the Church heirarchy was wrong wrt those teachings. Now they have fodder for the change they so badly want in the Church.

Agreed. Insurgent priests and nuns do incalculable harm to the Church.

We should pray for ALL orders to return to their original charism. Dozens of orders have abandoned those charisms, to the detriment of the entire Body of Christ.
Only dozens? More than that. And they’re NOT orders. They’re CONGREGATIONS.
