Mass Dress Code

I am old enough to remember or to at least hear about people putting Kleenex on their heads. Good times, right?

To a Ball? Chances are I would wear a ball gown. NOT the same thing I would wear to Mass. Do you wear ball gowns to Mass? To daily Mass. That would be something to see.

Of course if you are wearing ball gowns to daily Mass, chances are that the priest would pull you aside to talk to you about your mental health.
Very funny, I thought you would understand that I was referring to wearing proper dress for each occasion. If you remember the Kleenex, then it shouldn’t require an explanation. God Bless, Memaw P.S. I never wore a Kleenex either, even tho the comparison is kinda silly.

And how would this be enforced? Refusal of entry to those not complying with the dress code?
Again, the point I was making is they can’t! My frustration is why they even go through the motions, if they can’t do anything (or won’t do anything) about it…its just silly! People will wear what people wear, and the best we can do is set an example…no more, no less.

Not silly at all. Wearing a hat was a sign of the times. People wore them pretty much everywhere. And if they didn’t, for women, at least, they put a tissue on their head.

You seem to be remembering a time when people dressed up for everything. Heck, people dressed up to go to the grocery store. And to the doctor’s office. Of course, people dressed up for Church. 🤷 It didn’t mean anything. It was a sign of the times.

Now, people are more casual. If I am sick and I need to go to the doctor’s office, I am not going to take time to put on hose and do my makeup. If I need a gallon of milk, you might just see me in sweats or shorts.

And, when I go to Mass, I might wear jeans, a casual skirt/pants and a shirt. I own one dress for summer and a black skirt for winter. Everything else is pretty casual.

Oh, and I won’t put a Kleenex on my head.

Better still, we should not worry about setting an example at all. We should simply wear what we feel is respectful and appropriate and not concern ourselves with what others wear, or with setting an example for others. We shouldn’t hold ourselves up as something to be emulated by others.

Thank you. 👍

Well, have we beat this horse to death yet ???

I vote for a moratorium on this subject. 🙂

You can discuss all that with God when you see HIM. Why do you think Our Blessed Mother said at Fatima that “Fashions will be introduced that will offend my Son greatly”. God Bless, Memaw
**A truly pious person would know better!. **Ask the Saints! Broad minded people don’t care. God Bless, Memaw
P.S. Are you sure you know whats in the Lord’s eye?
If one is not dressed properly at the Vatican, one is not allowed in, Doesn’t that tell you something!! God Bless, Memaw
Memaw;12102601** said:
“Attire that is fitting for a Holy Place.” I don’t really think that included jeans and a T-shirt. **

Jeans today are so tight fitting it’s a wonder they don’t burst. Immodest clothing even if brand shinny new are NOT fitting for Mass, or anywhere else for that matter. God Bless, Memaw
Then why are you bothered about wearing them when you “fill in”. If there OK while setting in the pew, then why not on the Alter. Doesn’t make sense to me. It’s still God’s House and worthy of respect!, God Bless, Memaw
It’s not how it makes me feel that important. I am old enough to remember how we used to dress up for Mass. Not just run to Mass in any old thing we feel like. We took time to dress our kids nicely too. And I raised 7 of them. I doubt most people would go to see Queen Elizabeth the way they dress for Mass. Or even go to a Governors Ball etc. Somehow, Our Lord is not worthy enough to take a little time to dress nicely. We make up sooo many excuses and even try to tell HIM how he feels about the way we dress. Somehow we’ve lost the desire to even care. I go to daily Mass and I dress the same every day, just like on Sunday. God Bless, Memaw
Funny how insulting people can get when you don’t agree with them. God loves everyone, but HE doesn’t always agree with what we say, do or how we dress, no matter how hard we try to insist He does. I have NEVER condemned anyone, and believe me, I won’'t be the one saying "I told you so." God Bless, Memaw
You haven’t condemned or judged anyone? Somehow the evidence seems to show otherwise…unless you didn’t mean what you said…

God Bless!

I meant ever word I said and they are all truthful. The truth speaks for it’s self. Whatever is your problem??? God Bless, Memaw

Some, if not much of what you said is merely your opinion, and not objective truth. And yes, it does come across as being quite judgmental of those whose dress for Mass is not appropriate as determined by your opinion.

Everything else on here is someones opinion and I’m not supposed to have one?? It is all in line with Church teaching so it really isn’t :just my opinion" I don’t think I’m the one being judgmental !! God Bless, Memaw

The church has no teaching on what kind of trousers are worn.
If there is one, find it and post it.

Which Church teaching states that one should not wear jeans to Mass?

I think it’s a perception problem. You don’t perceive it as being judgemental or condemning–right? But other’s do especially when you post things that the Church has not said…about jeans. In your posts you talk about how other’s don’t care enough to dress nice. Is that not an assumption? How can you honestly know? You really can’t. For example…you might look at me in my jeans and assume that it is because I don’t care enough to dress “nice”–on something even the Vatican lets you wear. You think I’m not being respectful–at least from what you have said in your posts quoted above. You would never know that I have had the rug pulled out from under me from a very devistating personal issue that I don’t want to/can’t discuss. You would not know that I am in such a deep depression that I am hanging onto Christ with all my might. No one can tell my heart by looking. Do you honestly think that Christ would condemn me for picking myself up enough to get to Mass on Sat and Sunday. Which if you have ever been in a deep depression–it is almost impossible to do anything.

You have deemed jeans to be disrespectful but the Church has not.

Also…I am going to assume you don’t think asking me whatever is my problem is rude…however I perceive it as such. It does make me wonder why you bother to put “God Bless” after that…🤷

Yes…it is true that you think that jeans are disrespectul however it’s not necessarily true that they are. So…yes the truth does speak for itself.

There is no sin in wearing jeans to Mass. None.

The Vatican has not made that kind of judgement.

People are free to wear jeans.

“(If you are not certain what is/is not fitting, ask your grandmother or mother.)”

Which makes me wonder…what if you have neither? There are those of us that are not so fortunate…
