Does anyone know any sources for how the mass was celebrated durring the middle ages?

There are two excellent sources: Fr. Adrian Fortescue’s *The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described *and Fr. Josef A. Jungmann, S.J.'s book The Mass of the Roman Rite. Both contain information about the Mass as celebrated during the Middle Ages.

I second those two suggestions, and also note that M. Davies’s essay, which I posted a link to above, is basically a summary of Fr. Fortescue’s The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy. I believe that at the time that Davies’s essay was first published, Fr. Fortescue’s book was out of print. (It no longer is.)

That is correct. It’s still hard to find Fr. Fortescue’s book. I checked Amazon before making my recommendations and didn’t see it there, so didn’t recommend it.

The sources referred to are mostly about how the Mass was celebrated in theory: if you want more about the actuality, try Eamonn Duffy’s book ‘The Stripping of the Altars’. This focuses on the process of the English Reformation, but over half the book describes the religous life of the late 15th and early 16th century. It’s excellent.

You might find 'Voices of Morebath: Reformation and Rebellion in an English village" by Eamon Duffy useful

i had NO idea they had video cameras back then.

but, seriously, folks.

hey luke 1:48! how are ya?

good question.

the answer is, it was very similar to mass today. i just finished reading a book called ‘mass in the early church’, and i was pleasantly shocked (ever been pleasantly shocked?) at how much was the same.

church history, incidentally, was one big reason why i became catholic. i studied baptist history. then i studied church history. which was, remarkably, catholic history.

then i became catholic. 🙂

My understanding is that there is a new book coming out by a Benedictine, who’s name I didn’t catch; last name is Reid or Ried. Catholic Answers may have more info as it was mentioned on a recent program. It sounded like the book went back even before the middle ages.
