Are you claiming that the guns act as a deterent to would-be criminals? Well, that’s simply not true, your homicide rate from gun crime is 8 times higher than the western average - completely off the scale. And though crime is now falling you have always had one of the highest crime rates in the western world.

But Mexico has the most strict firearm laws in Americas. How’s that working for them?
The incidents of law abiding citizens murdering other citizens with firearms is nearly zero!!! Gun control works!!! 👍

How can you possibly claim to be free and independent people if 40% of you feel the need to posses a firearm to guarantee that freedom. And how about what your Bishops say about the need to restrict firearms, eventually to just the police and the military?
Simply put: a man who is prohibited from arming himself is not free.

The Bishops support nuclear disarmament, too. In an ideal world, it will happen, but probably not in my lifetime.

If firearm possession (other than conventional long guns) equates to freedom and independence, how do you account for freedom and independence in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the U.K., and in western Europe?
Depends on what you consider freedom.

The countries you list are all affiliated with the English government.

Americans fought a war of independence from England in the 1700s. Why? Because England was tyrannical.

Are you really telling me that you don’t even realise that your homicide rate from firearms is by far the highest in the western world?

Nonsense. Read up on how “tyrannical” Great Britain was at home and abroad back then. Also, read up on whether or not Australia et al are “affiliated with the English government.”

You lost me there. I could care less what the UN reports on. Their only interest is in creating a one world government. They can fall off of Manhattan for all I care.

True - it was. And springing forward to 2009 we had 68 people killed through gun crime and you had over 11,000. But if your gun makes you feel safe, perhaps that it is a good thing?

I’d take exception to your agreement with the notion that the British government then was tyrannical. The causes of the American War of Independence have far more to do with economic issues than with tyrannical repression of the people living in the then colonies.

Yes of course- it’s so easy to dismiss inconvenient figures that counter your justifications. It seems that you trust your paranoia more than hard facts.

Put it this way: There are about 90 million law abiding gun owners in the U.S. owning about 300 million guns. Not one of those 90 million people has ever killed anyone.

It is much easier for me to trust myself than in some disconnected bureaucrat who could care less about me.

You’re probably right, I confess to not being any kind of expert on the War of Independence. My comments were more a reflection that overall the British government didn’t have a completely unblemished record in terms of its management of the British Empire.

Not one? Are you not aware that many murderers, now serving time, would have been considered as law-abiding gun owners until they pulled the trigger on a wife or husband or other person?

Well if they are all law abiding, why the hell do they need the guns? Why is it that elsewhere in the western word where there are much more restrictive gun laws that gun crime is much lower?

To be honest I understand that, but why is that a justification for or make you feel you have the need to posses a gun? This isn’t a provocative question, I am genuinely interested.

Not much of a tyranny, since everybody was ok with it except on the east coast of NA.

Other areas then associated with Britain have no historical record of “tyranny” during the 1760s.

Well, to protect themselves from non-law abiding citizens, for one thing.

Also, for sport, competitive marksmanship, and simply collecting them as a hobby.

If they used a gun to kill someone they are not, by definition, law abiding.
