There is “Speculation”, and I am still trying to corroborate, that James Holmes was a member of OWS San Diego and was arrested at one of their events.
And even if the cops arrested him at OWS, unless he exibited signs of being a danger to himself and others, they could do nothing under our current system.

Well, it could explain why his family was so quick to agree that he was the shooter. Maybe he has been demostrating this type of growing antisocial behavior for a while.

Now, if this guy was wearing a full body suit of Dragonskin, then I want to know how a broke, working at McDonald’s, doctoral degree student bought $20,000 worth of weapons, armor, and explosives under the radar.
That is a very interesting question, well-worth following up. Of course, anticipating such things might well entail law enforcement poking into people’s “private” financial business in a more proactive, intrusive kind of way. A lot of people would object to that, no?

Unless the laws are changed regarding the mentally ill in our country, these types of things will continue. We need to look at mental illness as a legitamate physical illness. A disease of the brain and its ability to function correctly. If he was bleeding from his body, they would have given him treatment. We don’t respond to mental illness in the same way.

Well, he committed 71 felonies. He has no more right to privacy anymore.

THat is because there has been a move in this country to destigmatize mental illness. In the process and in the name of political correctness, the mentally ill have been retabbed as “quirky”, but otherwise perfectly normal.

You hit the nail on the head.
There is no “right” to be menally ill. People in our country are living under bridges because of the “political correctness” of people who do not work in the mental health field and have no clue what they are talking about.
Granted. our guy here wasn’t living under a bridge, but I would say he was obviously exhibiting warning signels that should have been acted on.

Well, I guess I am a sheep and I own that. I do tend to trust our military and law enforcement services with this type of equipment more than Joe Schmo.

I believe in licensing and authoritative structures in nearly all industries, whether that be law, accounting, plumbing, therapy (me :)), construction, catering, piloting, and yes military.

I’m not an anarchist. I respect and rely upon societal structures. I don’t worry about the collapsing Government and my ability to provide for my family in a post apocalyptic wasteland. I don’t grow food. I don’t store water. I don’t have a shelter.

My MIL talks this kind of stuff though.

People have a right to defend themselves. They do not have a right to weapons of war.
Ringil, full auto and the other weapons you mention can only be obtained with a class 5 FFL, and this has been the case since 1934.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_law_in_the_United_States

Could you clarify what type of “assault” weapons you believe should be banned?

Seeing the level of commitment the Colorado gunman had, I can’t think of any gun control laws that could have prevented this senseless act of violence.

I wouldn’t consider semiautomatics “weapons of war.” I would consider land mines and grenade launchers to fall in that category, though.

With the bomb making skills that this young man had…after seeing the explosions of material that was detinated by the bomb squads out on a safety range…can you imagine what might have occured if he had not had access or had not been interested in firearms?

The bombs that this evil person might have built and detonated could have killed possibly 4 or 5 times as many people as his guns did. We could have had Oklahoma City part two.

But those are covered (along with full auto files, or “machine guns”) under the MFA, under separate “type” of licenses required. If you know anyone who has applied for any type of FFL, it’s a pretty exhaustive process, completed by BATF.

Why not? What makes a soldier or police officer more equal than me?
Training and the need for more armament than the normal citizen. You dont need an assault rifle. A Shotgun and a handgun should be more than enough firepower to defend your family from an attack that will never happen anyway. I managed to make it to my 60th birthday having owned or even shot a gun. The only thing I have had to protect my family from was MTV

Agreed. MTV? And yet you watch Lady Gaga! Go figure…

Untill the night of July 19th most or all the people in that theatre could have said the same thing…

What is an “assault rifle”?

So, which one of our 2nd Amendment supporting foumers would like to take up the task of defending the legality of a 200-round magazine for a semi automatic assault rifle (or a 200 round magazine for anything)?

Not just that it can be legal, but why it should be legal in the first place.

Oh yea-several patrons returning fire with assuatl rifles and shotguns would have helped a lot.

I used to work in a meat market /slaughter house. In the boning room right behind the counter there was a shotgun hanging to be used if someone tried to rob us. I was never afraid of an armed robber shooting me, I was terrified of one of our butchers spraying the counter area trying to take out an armed robber.
