Masturbation - Why is it so bad!?

In a nutshell? A few thousand years ago, a bunch of men decided that anything relating to sex, or pleasure, in any way shape or form outside of it’s use for procreation was a bad thing.
You havn’t read the Song of Songs in the Bible, have you?

***Your very figure is like a palm tree,
your breasts are like clusters.

I said: I will climb the palm tree,
I will take hold of its branches.
Now let your breasts be like clusters of the vine
and the fragrance of your breath like apples,

And your mouth like an excellent wine-
that flows smoothly for my lover,
spreading over the lips and the teeth.

I belong to my lover
and for me he yearns.

Come, my lover, let us go forth to the fields
and spend the night among the villages.**
(Song of Songs 7:8-12)*

Doesn’t sound like a bunch of old fuddy-duddy kill-joys to me.

Neither passage is about masturbation.

Onan has to do with using withdrawal to prevent conception. Not masturbation. Whether you believe Onan was killed for disobedience to God and the Mosaic law or for "spilling his seed’ it is irrelevant to a masturbation discussion.
Not entirely. What if spilling your seed under any conscious condition amounts to the sin of Onan? Are we willing to take that risk for seconds of pleasure which arrive at the cost of joy?
Topics like lust, adultery etc are repeated countless times throughout the Bible. Masturbation is not addressed even once. If it was any kind issue to them, it would have been mentioned in Leviticus 18. The silence on the subject deafening. It is not listed because it was not “detestable.”
But, we must avoid reliance upon the presence or lack of any specific action in the bible. The bible is incomplete in such a capacity, and that capacity is not the bible’s intention. We have a Church that has authoritatively spoken on the subject. It does not matter that we live in a society which worships sexual pleasure. Neither does it matter if everyone we know approves of such practice. What matters are God’s absolutes as spoken through His Church.

The bible does not prohibit methamphetamine use. Is it thus OK?

So I have been searching for this answer for a while, and in the Bible, I have been unable to determine why masturbation without lust is so wrong! The Bible stresses that lust is a horrible thing, which I can easily and whole-heartedly agree upon, however it never even mentions the ‘sin’ of masturbation. I find this interesting, as every other sexual sin was covered in some way or another. Now going back to masturbation without lust, please do not tell me it is not possible to masturbate without lust, as being a 14 year old guy, I know it’s very easy to get urges after a while just because of the raging hormones! I’ve never looked at porn, nor have I ever truly wanted to as it disgusts me, but I honestly cannot understand why masturbation is so wrong. I did find an interesting scripture, however that may be somewhat interpreted as masturbation and or a nocturnal emission," 'When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 17 Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. 18 When a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both must bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. " What I find interesting is that it is not specifically mentioned that the man had a nocturnal emission, while in other verses in the bible (e.g. “If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there.”) it is mentioned by name that that’s what it was. So if we assume this was referring to masturbation, all God says is to clean up, which is exactly what he says for having sex in wedlock or having a period! Can someone please explain to me why masturbation is so wrong without lust? I would really appreciate it as I’ve been struggling to understand this for about 2 years now! Thanks!
You can not masturbate without Lust. even if not lusting aafter another person, You are lusting after your own self and sexualy gratification. Next nocturnal emmission is not the same as masturbation as unless you wake up you have not control over it. As another on here has said stop now. you may not be using porn now, but if you do not stop you will be.

Sometimes it good to learn things from different contexts. So I will take an interfaith view here. For a long long time now. Millions and millions of lifetimes we have been engrossed in materialism. It is illusive and unreal. We strive to rise above materialism. There are many kinds of beings even above angels that do not have sex unless they procreate. That is how it was meant to be. Desire is so strong because of the eons and eons of this materialistic grabbing behavior. Also you are young I wouldn’t put to much pressure on yourself. Lonliness is one culprit to masterbation as well as stress.

Good luck 2 you.

As a former masturbation addict, I know how you feel. I know the Bible and the Catechism and the Church all condemn masturbation. But as right as they are, I find using those just begs the question. So here’s my personal testimony:

I did not date and had but a few female friends until I kicked the habit in the summer of last year. I did not get a date until February of this year. When I masturbated, I was always shy and timid around girls. I was afraid to talk to them. I acted like an idiot to try to impress them. I would lust after any random girl I saw that day. It was an empty, lonely, sad life. I wasn’t living, only existing.

do you see the point? Masturbation stunted my growth. Not physically, but spiritually and mentally. It prevented me from becoming a man. Men are supposed to be strong, brave, loving, and self-sacrificing, and masturbation is the opposite of all of those. Anyone who disagrees is simply too afraid to man up. It’s a pathetic, emasculating turn-off.

Now I have lady friends whom I genuinely love and care for. I can love a girl for who she is. It’s so wonderful. I can shamelessly tell her “I love you” and “you are beautiful”, and know she feels loved. Women are beautiful and love to be honored. That is an irrefutable fact that I have repeatedly seen firsthand. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar

And consider the words of C.S. Lewis: “Lust is a poor, weak, wimpering thing compared with that richness and energy of desire which will arise when lust has been burned away”.

So, teencatholic, not to brag, but I know I may be talking like masturbation is an easy habit to kick. I know it’s not. I didn’t just go cold turkey overnight. It took me months to stop. Pray the rosary; Our Lady will help you. Know that God is on your side and is not trying to catch you in your sin. He wants you to stop masturbating because He has something better for you. Know that there is nothing you could do to make God love you any less than He already does It’s called love. Go to confession frequently. It came to the point where I was going every week. Don’t worry, the priest won’t judge you, he hears the same stuff all the time. You can do it, and with God on your side, you will overcome it.

Cardinal Ratzinger recommended that Catholics explore Jewish exegesis of the Bible (in the document The Jewish People and their Scripture in the Holy Bible).

It is part and parcel of Judaism to study the Torah. Jews come to different conclusions and say things in refreshing ways that are liberating from the dry, rote formulas, like repeating the Catechism, over and over.

According to Jewish exegesis, sexuality is a gift. God gave humanity a command to reproduce. They consider it a tragedy if a man never marries and never has children.
On and on. Sexuality is a gift from God to be enjoyed.

Catholic exegesis that minimizes stuff like this has to be suspect at the least, and considered further as Ratzinger said.

If X was a mortal sin, plain and simple, then why does the Catechism not say that X is a mortal sin. In fact, the quoted section of the Catechism in a previous post says that a person’s culpability for masturbation may be “minimal.” So, I think it is unfair to burden people by judging their actions and pronouncing judgment on them.

Let’s stay committed to the truth, by all means, at all times, but READ what the Catechism says – culpability - minimal. when I was in Catholic high school in the mid-1960’s, the subject came up and the priest said that it was a venial sin, and COULD BECOME a mortal sin under some conditions.

Look at the sin of coveting, in the Ten Commandments. That must be a mortal sin, but nobody, or nearly nobody, worries about that, to begin with.

From a different standpoint, Jews consider the holiness code of Leviticus to apply to the Israelites (Jews) and to no one else. Even in the new testament, imposing the “law” on Christians was ruled out – e.g. no circumcision required for admission.

So, come on. Let’s be consistent. People who want the hell-and-brimstone message about masturbation, based on equivocal and unreflective interpretations of the old covenant, are Judaizers, as the translations of the NT call them.

We get squeemish about the subject of masturbation, admit it. It’s one of our favorite and most misrepresented venial sins, especially in this forum. Who wants to defend it? Well, nobody does, really.

What about gossiping or stealing? Mortal or venial sins? The Catechism says that stealing from somebody who can afford the loss is NOT A SIN. John Paul II said that one of the greatest temptations in our age is relativism. but, the catechism, itself is very relativistic. The culpability for the sin of masturbation is a BIG maybe. READ IT. I don’t think anybody should bully around in these forums with questions like this.

This is one of the most sensible, reasonable posts I have read on this subject on these forums. I am not arguing that the subject is not a sin, but find it refreshing that I might not be the only one on these forums who tires of the same old dry, unemotional, “but the Catechism says - insert direct quote without any circumstances considered here” posts.

I see the same things when folks post on different subjects in regards to lots of things. You’ll get someone who refers to say something their priest told them or discussed with them that does not 110% match “what the Cathechism says”, and suddenly, that person is supposed to write the Bishop, complain, and have the priest straightened out. It’s very disheartening, and not very becoming of any Catholic, or Christian of any denomination.

but the problem is, I don’t think anyone on this thread has done what you’ve accused. The catechism that was quoted claimed it was a disorder, not a mortal sin. And no one has throw hell-fire and brimstone.

Am I missing something in your jumping to this conclusion?

Since I’m pretty new to Catholic faith, I have a lot to learn.
If masturbation is a mortal sin, which of the Ten Commandments do you break by doing ot?

Let’s be clear. Masturbation CAN be a mortal sin. Masturbation CAN be a venial sin. Masturbation can be an addiction, and hence not sinful. However, one usually sinned during the time that masturbation became the addiction. But the state of ones mind is usually what determines how sinful it is.

Now, in response to your question, the 10 commandments is not the “list of all sins mortal”. Does masturbation include lust for another person? One simply has to go to Matthew 5 - 27 *** "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28 ****** But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.***

Crumpy, thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut, as rotlex said, it brought a lot more insight and made a lot of sense. Also NotWorthy, when you say that it depends on your mind, does this mean as long as your not lusting after a person or thinking sexually corrupt thoughts while masturbating, it’s not a sin? Thanks for all the posts everyone!

I understood that he meant that masturbating is a sin before you become an addict. Addiction is not a sin but what led to it is. It’s like saying Alcoholism isn’t a sin but drinking too much is.
In other words, if you know right now that masturbation is a sin and do it anyway, you’re committing a sin(even if you’re not thinking sexually).
Correct me if I’m wrong.

No, it determines the level of sinfulness.

You're only 14. I would as others have suggested pray and understand as best as possible that women are not X objects. Some like to be treated as such but it sounds like you might need some female friends. You have to in time figure these things out for yourself. I don't know if you have been confirmed or take the sacrament or not but if you do I would hold off on that until you figure things out. Talking to a preist also never hurts.

God did not have to Create the Universe; therefore there must be a reason [at least one] WHY HE CHOOSE TO DO SO. And God did not in an absolute sense HAVE TO Create living things; most especially humanity… So WHY DID GOD DO IT?

**Isa.43: 7, 21 **“every one who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."… “the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

Humanity alone can Know, Love and serve God and THEREFORE all of humanity is Mortally Committed and Commanded to do so [the 1st. Commandment]. In Essence this issue comes down to who is in charge of our lives. ONLY two choices exist. Either I am my own boss or God is MY BOSS. The responsibility can’t be shared. Me or God are in charge.

Sexuality is given by God for a precise purpose: Growth of the species
. Gen.1: 26 to 28 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

This COMMAND of God to “be fruitful and multiply” can be found five more times in the book of Genesis: 9:7, 17:6, 28:24, 35:11, and 48:4. That my friend in ONE MORE than the Most Holy Eucharist is commanded.

***Sexuality is for TWO purposes: BOTH between a married man and his wife. 1. Procreation and what the catechism calls the “Unitive Function.” This means that as a PRIME purpose it is to be fun and enjoyable for married couples as a reward and INCENTIVE to have children.

Because God ALONE controls ALL Birth and death issues; God ALONE can and does through His One Faith [set of beliefs], one Church and One God determine what is acceptable to God and what is SAYING NO TO GOD. Masturbation is self gratification, has ALL do with LUST and nothing to do with LOVE, which is it’s purpose and function.

So friend who is in charge of you’re soul, you’re like? You or God.***

Masturbation is NORMALLY a Mortal Sin: YOU [or me] cannot say it is not. A Confessor MIGHT ? But that is a trained and skilled priest guided by the Holy Spirit. don’t make the MORTAL error of thing Oh I have a bad habit, so it’s not a MORTAL SIN! If you’re wrong, it could be fatal to you’re soul!

The subject of M* is brought up frequently on this website and it SEEMS that well-intentioned people like to point out that M* is “gravely disordered” and equate that with being “gravely immoral,” or a mortal sin, in so many words.

If it WAS always a mortal sin, then why didn’t the CCC say so? Instead it belabors the issue and implies that it “may be” a mortal sin under certain circumstances, which it doesn’t exactly define.

No, I haven’t read the entire CCC, so I don’t know if it handles other sins this way, as being a venial sin or a mortal sin, under various circumstances.

But, I think people would better spend their time worrying about gossiping, back-stabbing, ruining people’s reputation, drunkenness, selling illegal drugs, judging other people, giving bad example to small kids with bad speech or actions, etc. than to obsessing about masturbation – alone.

We ought to be focusing on positives, like encouraging holiness in prayer and actions, and giving support to people with various kinds of moral failings.

The job of all Catholics is to evangelize the world, and every one of our waking actions should be measured against that standard. We are COMMANDED to “love the LORD our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.” Let’s keep the goal in mind and let’s all work towards that.

Pat, when did I say that I could judge when it is a sin or not?!?!?!?! I agree with the first part of your post, but I don’t recall saying that, “Well, this is ok, and that is all right”. I’m not trying to minimalize anything, but I wanted to be clear, sometimes its more of a sin than others.

Are all thefts equal? Are all lies equal?
