Material for a convert

I have a friend who is in the process of converting to the Church and I was wondering what would be the best material to nudge his way? I’m looking for stuff that is faithful to the Tradition of the Church, if you catch my drift…

Rome Sweet Home by Scott and Kimberly Hahn. Anything by Scott Hahn seems to be grounded Catholic teaching. Karl Keating is also very good. I also particularly enjoyed “Letters to a Young Catholic” by George Weigel.

Catholicism for Dummies is an excellent, very readable source of catechetical instruction. It carries both the nihil obstat as well as the Imprimatur. I learn something each time I read my copy.

The *US Catholic Catechism for Adults *is a great companion to the official CCC. It presents the catechism in a easier to read format, with plenty of references to the CCC.

Also, *Catholicism for Dummies *is a great book!

My wife has been Catholic for years and she learned a lot from my Scott Hahn books. Rome sweet Home, The Lamb’s Supper, and Hail Holy Queen were definite musts from my collection. That and the book from Fulton Sheen, Life of Christ and the two books on Jesus of Nazareth from Pope Benedict.

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass (Book): Understanding What We Say and Do In The Liturgy would also be beneficial if this person is very scripture oriented.

I am in the same boat as your friend and while waiting for RCIA in the fall I am enjoying the catechism, handbook for today’s catholic from Liguori, a biblical walk through the mass by edward sri, crossing the tiber by stephen ray, and a lovely little gem called catholic’s manual from 1924 (i love old books!)

I have had wonderful suggestions from people on this forum…

• Essential of the Faith: A Guide to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

Tell him to watch the Journey Home on EWTN. If he doesn’t have acces to EWTN, but has an iphone/ipod, he can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes.

The Journey home really helped me.

This may seem obvious – but I’d recommend Sacred Scripture in conjunction with a missal, to get the context of all the Scriptural references that make up the Mass. A person familiar with the Bible but not so much with the Mass may be amazed to find how much Scripture is packed into the Mass – not just in the readings, but in every prayer, every posture, and every exchange between the priest and the people.

I’d also recommend a good guide to the Mass, such as those by Fulton Sheen, Peter Kreeft, etc. When you’re aware of the background behind each liturgical word and action, it greatly enhances the experience of worshipping God in spirit and in truth.

Assuming you’re in the U.S., I would suggest “The United States Catechism for Adults”.

And, if you have access to the DVD collection, Fr. Robert Barron’s series called “Catholicism” is amazing.
