First, my cycles have never been regular and there are just so many days of questionable fertility - so much gray area. I would love a method that just tells you concretely yes you are fertile or no you are not!! We have used STM but temperatures are difficult to use until I am cycling regularly and I never have more than a few cycles before I am pregnant again. With Creighton, I had a little mucus almost every day so therefore no relations, it was difficult for me to make 100% observations, especially before urination, and our instuctor was inconveniently about 1.5 hours away and would even charge me for phone consultations. I used Marquette postpartum before my last pregnancy and was able to determine when I first ovulated, we abstained until last peak day plus 4, as advised, and still got pregnant. You ask “how could you possibly determine this?”. I ask - how could anyone else possibly determine it for you? If what you are trying to say is that the decision is very “subjective” - I agree with you.
Another question that one might ask is…How can I have sex with my husband while I am fertile, if simultaneously I am anxious to avoid a child? I know that if I am interested in sex, but my wife is tired and not likewise inclined, I instantly lose interest in having sex. The idea of the other party not being “in the mood” makes the whole idea of sex inappropriate in my mind. I’d feel the same way (during fertile times) if my wife was wishing not to have a child. I don’t understand how one can freely engage in sex (while fertile) at the same time one is hoping not to become pregnant. Perhaps the attitude to the (potential) child needs to be resolved first?
What about the thought of a long period of NFP sickens you?
I don’t
And then we have the “last minute decisions”! Days when all is going well, we are both in good moods, questionable fertility, but we decide to be together anyways. These are the real stinkers because if we were to sit down and rationally weigh out all the pros and cons, we would most probably decide in all prudence to “be done”. After all, we have 7, are approaching 40, I already have arthritic hips, I am often overwhelmed with demands at home, and I know my husband is stressed about financially supporting us all …BUT…I always end up with labor/delivery imminent and wondering what the heck were we thinking:shrug: This is where I see an advantage to ABC/sterilization since you can decide this with your “rational” mind!!!, but maybe I don’t have all the answers!!!
That is why long term NFP use does not excite me!! And I do realize no one here can tell me what to do, but it is helpful to get others opinions. I just do not know any other couple practicing NFP in real life who I would be comfortable discussing this!!! I am pretty sure most use ABC or get sterilized - at least everyone in me or hubby’s family! Even my mom, who is devoutly catholic, had her tubes tied after her last baby at 36 was thought to have Down syndrome ((but did not))!
Thank you for the discussion! Something to ponder!!
