At mass the priest said the talent’s were spiritual abilities that God gives us.

What were you taught ?

What have you thought on this parable

Can we see what are talents are that we have to use for God’s purpose?

Can you see God’s talant use in other people?

Does it require spiritual decernment?

Or is it obvious?

I don’t recall being taught specifically about this Bible story, but I always thought that talents were just the sum total of all the abilities that God gives us and it was a reminder that we should try to use all of our abilities for the good of others and for the glory of God.

So talents could be spiritual abilities or just things we are able to do. For example, some people are really good at playing sports and a number of them have used their position as pro athletes to evangelize in some way, whether it’s publicly like Tim Tebow or more privately where they just try to live a God-centered life and help their teammates and colleagues and others they meet with their life problems and to also find God.

We can all do these things to some extent whatever our skills or abilities might be.

A talent is a former weight and unit of currency, used especially by the ancient Romans and Greeks

This was the way Jesus taught. He used the word talent as it was understood in that period of time in order to explain how we are to use the gifts that God has given us.

These gifts include anything that God as given us - from money to skills to chrisms.

I don’t think it requires special discernment unless someone wants an excuse to not use what he or she knows full and well should be shared for the glory of God.

For instance: Should I use this gift of photography for the betterment of a human life or not? If this is a serious question for someone, they are simply casting about looking for a way out.

I think that it is an interesting lesson. It speaks to everyone whether or not they have some big or something little to give. Even if you do not think you have much to give, there is no excuse for not sharing what you do have. Even if all you have to share with others is a kind smile, it is enough and should not be buried underneath the ground of self pity.
