Matt Fradd on Andrew Cuomo and Excommunication

If he is excommunicated, keeping in mind it is to remind him he’s risking hell and it’s a loving act not a punishing act, would Cuomo even care? Or would he proceed to blaspheme the Church and say the Church is sexist and misogynistic?

Fradd actually agrees with me here at the end of his podcast, he says it’s likely the NY government would try and crush the Church as a result. But Fradd says, then that is what we must do, suffer for the sake of the Gospel
 
Thank you for your responses. I don’t know anything about Cuomo as far as to
his attending weekly Mass or his Catholic
life, but if he thinks it is okay to do this
and his Bishop and the Church remain silent, something is wrong.

I think you got it confused, Aquinas didn’t say that. That’s the objection in the summa. From the summa: “On the contrary, The Apostle (1 Corinthians 5:5) ordered a man to be excommunicated.”

How is excommunication a loving act if it will result in that person going to hell? It seems that it would be more loving to help someone to get into heaven? Being burned by fire in hell for all eternity does not seem to be a very pleasant situation.
 
I think the whole point of excommunication is so the person will repent and come back to the church. From the summa (sorry kinda long):

“I answer that, The judgment of the Church should be conformed to the judgment of God. Now God punishes the sinner in many ways, in order to draw him to good, either by chastising him with stripes, or by leaving him to himself so that being deprived of those helps whereby he was kept out of evil, he may acknowledge his weakness, and humbly return to God Whom he had abandoned in his pride. In both these respects the Church by passing sentence of excommunication imitates the judgment of God. For by severing a man from the communion of the faithful that he may blush with shame, she imitates the judgment whereby God chastises man with stripes; and by depriving him of prayers and other spiritual things, she imitates the judgment of God in leaving man to himself, in order that by humility he may learn to know himself and return to God.”
 
In 2009, a nun, Sr Margaret McBride, was excommunicated for allowing an abortion to be performed on a 27 yr old woman. She was an administrator at the hospital as well as its liaison to the diocese.

What Cuomo did in signing this new law allowing abortion up to the time of birth is the equivalent of that. Cardinal Dolan is wrong not to excommunicate him.
 
Excommunication will help the person get to Heaven, because it serves as a warning that they’re on the road Hell.
 
I agree that in theory excommunication would and should be seen as a warning sign, but presumably if the potential excommunicee is so poorly formed in his faith as Cuomo probably is, will it have that warning effect, or will the liberals either 1) get mad at The Church and try to shut it down or 2) treat it like a joke?
Could the bishop say “you’re not allowed to take communion in this diocese unless you publicly change your view” – is that essentially the same as excommunication?

It’s less severe. Excommunication bars someone from receiving any sacrament until lifted.

I think it should be used way more on pro aborts. It may not change the individuals mind but sends a strong message that Catholics must not support abortion.
 
Just take a look at his reelection campaign video that was blasted all day here in NY and you’ll see where his loyalty lies.
