Thanks MrSnaith for the info on Jewish matrimony. It brings more depth to my reading of Jesus’ words.

Have a read of the Book of Tobit (IMO, the best-kept secret in the OT). You can easily do it in one sitting. There is a description of pre-Christian Jewish tribal and family life, ancient language use, the most highly developed angelology in the OT, as well as details of a marriage in the tribe of Naphtali in it.
