I’m curious. What constitues a Sin against the Spirit? Is that renouncing God like the Blashemy project? Or is that refusing to accept that God can help you? I’m curious because I think that some people probably do something along those lines then when they realize their mistake they fall into despair and think God won’t forgive them so they stop trying and some even end their lives over it. Perhaps I’m wrong. Any ideas?
Peace be with you

In it’s most concise proper understanding it is “Denial of God.”

Under the right circumstances as expressed by Chrit; all other sins hold at least the po** 1John.1 Verses 8 to 10:** "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."

** 1 John.5 Verses 16 to 17**"If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. ** There is sin which is mortal**; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, ** but there is sin which is not mortal. **

** John.20 Verses 20 to 23**]" When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. ** Jesus said to them ** again, “Peace be with you. ** As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” ** And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.“ssibility of being forgiven.”

New American Bible commentary:
22 [31] Blasphemy against the Spirit: the sin of attributing to Satan () what is the work of the Spirit of God ().

From the Haydock Commentary which contains several notes on this:

Ver. 31.
The blasphemy[2]* against the Spirit,* or against the Spirit and the Holy Ghost. St. Augustine takes notice, that this is one of the most difficult places in the Scriptures. According to the common exposition, here is not meant a sin committed by speaking against the third person of the blessed Trinity, the Holy Ghost, but that sin by which the obstinate Jews wilfully opposed Christ, and attributed those miracles to Beelzebub, which he performed by the Spirit of God, of which they could not be ignorant, but by a wilful blindness. (Witham)

— The sin here spoken of is that blasphemy, by which the Pharisees attributed the miracles of Christ, wrought by the Spirit of God, to Beelzebub, the prince of devils. Now this kind of sin is usually accompanied with so much obstinacy, and such wilful opposing the Spirit of God, and the known truth, that men who are guilty of it are seldom or ever converted; and therefore are never forgiven, because they will not repent. Otherwise there is no sin which God cannot, or will not forgive to such as sincerely repent, and have recourse to the keys of the Church. (Challoner)

Therefore I say: this therefore is not referred to what immediately precedes, but to what is said in verse 24. (Maldonatus)

— Whosoever he be, says St. Augustine, that believeth not man’s sins to be remitted in the Church of God, and therefore despiseth the bounteous mercies of God, in so mighty a work, if he continue in his obstinate mind till death, he is guilty of sin against the Holy Ghost. (Enchir. lxxxiii. ep. 50. in fine.)

[2] Ver. 31. Spiritus blasphemia, e de tou pneumatos blasphemia. St. Augustine (serm. lxxi. de verbis Evang. Matt. chap. v. p. 388. tom. v.) says of this place: Forte in omnibus Scripturis Sanctis, nulla major quæstio, nulla difficilior. And again, (chap. xii. page. 394) he give this interpretation: ipsa ergo impœnitentia, est Spiritus blasphemia. See also St. Jerome on this place. St. Chrysostom’s exposition is more easy, when he thinks the sense is, that such a sin shall scarcely be forgiven. uper part e amartia asuggnostos dm. ma. p. 274.

Spirit has you may know has many definitions, spiritus is latin for breath, spirits is also a word used for alchoholic beverages. Unquestionably a sin against the spirit would be using a lower priced tonic water with your gin [which of course I would hope to be Bombay gin] so always use Shcweppes tonic. As for the breath ,I would conclude that not properly brushing your mouth out after days of drinking the beverages mentioned, would most likely be considered a sin by some in close proximity.

In opposition to Alexander Pope, I will use the upper case Spirit as it is in the context. (But, certainly those would be ‘blasphemies’ to humanity to abuse ‘spirits’ in those ways Mr. Pope.) I think that blasphemy is uttering bad things at the Spirit. I refuse to use examples because I will feel like I am. Just use your imagination. 🙂

God bless

Sin against the Holy Spirit is the refusal to repent and to ask forgiveness. All sin is forgivable and forgiven.

God was able to create good from David and he had both murdered and committed adultery. God loved David because David converted and repented.

There are people who repent in grief over their sins and yet they feel that God either can’t or won’t forgive them.

These grieving people are not sinning against the Holy Spirit, they are unknowingly sinning against the virtue of hope. Unknowingly they are sinning against God’s mercy and forgiveness.

*Catechism of the Catholic Church *1864

QUOTE
"Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin." [Mk 3:29; cf. Mt 12:32, Lk 12:10] There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sin and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.
