Anyone’s take on that ? All man-made structures will be taken down ?

Thanks

Which bible translation are you using? It refers to the Temple in Jerusalem:

Matthew 24:1-2
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)
24 And Jesus being come out of the temple, went away. And his disciples came to shew him the buildings of the temple.
2 And he answering, said to them: Do you see all these things? Amen I say to you there shall not be left here a stone upon a stone that shall not be destroyed.

You will have to tell us which Bible you get this from because so far I can’t find anything about “man-made structures will be taken down”.

Po18guy has already quoted the D_R Bible.

NAB:

Matt 24:1 Jesus left the temple area and was going away, when his disciples approached him to point out the temple buildings.
2 He said to them in reply, “You see all these things, do you not? Amen, I say to you, there will not be left here a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.”

RSVCE:

Matt 24:1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down.”

Aquinas Study Bible:

Matt 24:1 AND Jesus being come out of the temple, went away. And his disciples came to shew him the buildings of the temple. 2 And he answering, said to them: Do you see all these things? Amen I say to you there shall not be left here a stone upon a stone that shall not be destroyed.

Christian Community Bible, Catholic Pastoral Edition:

Matt 24:1 Jesus left the Temple and as he was walking away, his disciples came to him and pointed out the imposing Temple buildings. But he said, "You see all this? Truly I say to you: not one stone will be left upon another here. All will be thrown down.

The Oxford Study Bible:

Matt 24:1 Jesus left the Temple and was walking away when his disciples came and pointed to the Temple buildings. He answered, “Yes , look at it all. Truly I tell you: not one stone will be left upon another; they will all be thrown down”.

Ignatius Catholic Study Bible:

Matt 24: 1 Jesus left the Temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the Temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down”.

ου βλεπετε παντα ταυτα - “Do you not see all these?”
For “these” to all be simultaneously in sight of the disciples in that time and place, he could not have meant all human buildings, and the usual understanding has been a prophetic reference to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in AD 70, about forty years after Jesus’ comment.

As I understand it, the temple consisted of several separated structures within a walled area and was not a monolithic form such as the Parthenon. Thus, the term “buildings” could have been aggregated to mean the temple in its entirety.

2 He said to them in reply, ‘You see all these? In truth I tell you, not a single stone here will be left on another: everything will be pulled down.’

He was talking about the temple.

Oh sorry … The New American Bible. Does that matter ? almost ever translation I’ve seen is basically the same, saying that the stones will be thrown down.

The concern was addressed already. I was just thinking that perhaps there was some figurative language or deeper meaning behind the scripture.

It is not the NAB. I quoted that earlier.

This is what you said was in there:

“All man-made structures will be taken down”

That is not in the NAB.

Alright first of all, you need to calm down.

The meaning is specific, I thought the scripture might have been amibiguous - hence my suggestion of all man made structures being taken down.

And what is with the kind of bible ?? The scripture is basically the same in almost every translation/bible I have seen online. I have a physical NAB, and that scripture is almost verbatim with each online translation I’ve seen.

???

Chill out.

I was not the only one asking which Bible.
In future quote the text from whatever Bible you are using correctly. Don’t make up your own.
If we are to discuss what is in the Bible we need the exact quote.

Your “All man-made structures will be taken down” is so general it can mean my house will fall down!

“The scripture is basically the same in almost every translation/bible I have seen online.”

Yes, that’s why we all were scratching our heads and fruitlessly looking around the net for your self-authorized translation, which isn’t “basically the same.”

Avid scholar indeed.

All the translations (King James, New American, etc) have the SAME general idea, so I don’t know what your talking about, bro.

Now go back to your 6th graders.

Yes, but your translation does not.

“Now go back to your 6th graders.”

Not until Wednesday night.

That prophecy was fulfilled literally as the invading Roman army dismantled the Temple stone by stone seeking gold among the stones .

Some Evangelicals get carried away with this. I have heard it said that all man made structures, institutions, creations, laws, relationships, etc., will be destroyed at the end of time.

Of course this always includes the “Man made” Catholic Church.

They use parts of Revelation and piece together various passages from all over the New Testament, including the one you brought up to prove that is so.

I think some of us are just a little punchy when we see this stuff (potentially) being brought up. Forgive us in our zeal. 😊

Not in a literalistic way though. The sanctuary was actually destroyed by fire (Josephus claimed that it was accidental - according to him Titus ordered that the Temple be spared), but not before the Romans looted it.

Now as soon as the army had no more people to slay or to plunder, because there remained none to be the objects of their fury (for they would not have spared any, had there remained any other work to be done), [Titus] Caesar gave orders that they should now demolish the entire city and Temple, but should leave as many of the towers standing as they were of the greatest eminence; that is, Phasaelus, and Hippicus, and Mariamne; and so much of the wall enclosed the city on the west side. This wall was spared, in order to afford a camp for such as were to lie in garrison [in the Upper City], as were the towers [the three forts] also spared, in order to demonstrate to posterity what kind of city it was, and how well fortified, which the Roman valor had subdued; but for all the rest of the wall [surrounding Jerusalem], it was so thoroughly laid even with the ground by those that dug it up to the foundation, that there was left nothing to make those that came thither believe it [Jerusalem] had ever been inhabited. This was the end which Jerusalem came to by the madness of those that were for innovations; a city otherwise of great magnificence, and of mighty fame among all mankind.

The fact that the small parts of the old city are still standing even today shows that Jesus’ prophecy did not come true in a hyper-literal way, since some of the stones are still “upon another.” (cf. also the Western Wall)
