Matt, this may have begun with us looking at the phrase “Catholic lite” differently. I’ve heard this phrase used in three ways: to describe the Episcopalian “church” of the USA, to describe the Methodist confession, and to describe leftist, lukewarm, cafeteria Catholics, especially those who don’t acknowledge the primacy of the Pope and who pick and choose what teachings to believe.Nobody said the words catholic light exept you. everyone else refered to “light” as not spirutally deep. Especially posts 6 and 7. You have misunderstood this. Matthew Kelly is not “Catholic light” but he isn’t a “deep spirutally centered speaker” I’m sure even he would agree. You have misunderstood. It happens.

I perceive it as a gross injustice to label a speaker of Kelly’s caliber with that same label of “Catholic lite”. One has only to read what he says to know that he is the antithesis of Catholic lite. Of course I’m going to object to that appellation. Again, no one on this thread accused Matthew of what you say we did. But even if we did, it isn’t a “gross injustice” LOL:rolleyes: save that for something that it describes, no need to be overly dramatic.

No, I’ve probably never been to your parish unless it’s in Texas. Yes, I spent six years at a great parish. Now I’m back at a parish that I perceive as stagnant, and I’m unsure about becoming active there. Perhaps I know exactly what you’re talking about. But I find that mentally grouping others into a separate category of less-holy only hurt me in the past.I’m glad you have improved as a person. mentally grouping others is logical and correct as long as it is done with charity and honesty and facts. and experience. To not do so is ridiculous and can be very dangerous. At the least it is naieve. True though that grouping people can also be dangereous. I stand by my assesment of my parish as I know it well. I would actually apply that to many Catholics in the US also.

You said that your fellow parishioners were excited to get prominent Catholic speakers to visit. That is a very positive sign! I don’t understand the dismissive attitude toward them. It is a very good sign for your parish when people enjoy good Catholic speakers. It can take time for a parish to develop a deeper spirituality. Things move slow in the Catholic church (mostly).Yes I agree!!! I wish you had just posted this instead. It is a GOOD thing Mat Kelly came, He doesnt speak to me much and that is a valid opinion. I like to go deeper. 😃

I mean, think of the most liberal church you know of. Would they be excited to get Matt Maher or any of the Catholic speakers previously mentioned? No, they would be openly hostile.]👍 This is also very true. I am glad he came, again, it is a personal preference here that I don’t agree with.
We are probably more alike than you could tell from these posts.

Matthew Kelly alleges to have received private revelations.

To date, he has not gone to his bishop in Australia to ask for a proper investigation.

That sends warning flags to me.

He is also publicly accused of being a womanizer and from what I understand, there is evidence to back this up. I know from talking to fellow alumni of Franciscan University that Kelly was into the fast cars scene.

I can not warn people enough about this man. Keep with the classics and pay no heed to these modern-day “prophets”.

Hello All

I think that Matthew Kelly will ‘last’. He’s not a ‘one hit wonder’.

He is a genuine person seeking to do God’s Will for his life.

His “Words from God” and his own writings changed the course of my life and I am
deeply grateful for his message.

I first heard him speak in November of 1993 and I still buy his books, I hope he comes back to Australia so I can hear him in person again.

It’s quite offensive to suggest that he is a womaniser. What if it is God’s Will that he get married? Should he not go out with different women to see who he should marry?

It is also good to be sceptical about private revelations, we should not believe everyone who says that God speaks to them. And I think that Matthew Kelly would be the first to admit this himself.

Karla from Australia.

While I may not be his biggest fan. Rumors and innuendo and attempted slander with no proof have no business on this thread.

If you would like to see where the accusations come about, go to unitypublishing dot com or go to google and search “Matthew Kelly, Unity Publishing” and a couple of hits should come up.

Any further questions, the author of Unity Publishing has his phone number, postal address and E-mail address right on the front page. He would be glad to share with you his knowledge of the story.

I didn’t find anything there that was factual. Just some rantings and innuendo, actually it was a little disturbing. It isn’t Matthew Kelly that I am worried about but the guy from unity publishing. He seems to have a nack for hate. I’d be careful if I were you.

I have never known U.P.'s author to hate anything other than sin and injustice.

If you do not want to know the story, hey, I can not ram it down your throat. Meanwhile, however, you’ll have to accept the fact that if you do not wish to investigate, you have lost the right of way to say that the statement “Matthew Kelly is accused of being a womanizer” is slanderous and unfactual.

Matthew Kelly does not write about bad things. Personally I think he isn’t the saint or demon people proclaim. As for being a womanizer… before I was married I would shake to think what people would have said about me. Hey what can I say, some guys got it some don’t.😃 My wife knows how in demand I am. She lucked out.😉
Weren’t some of the best saints also womanizers. I’m thinking of Augustine here.
You would have better luck convincing me that he is a tad new agey than that he is evil because he is smooth.

I did investigate, there was nothing there… Slander does not prove slander. Rumor does not prove rumor. My friend, let me introduce you to the Catholic virture of Charity. It involves giving people the benifit of the doubt. If you can’t back up your claims, It might be wise to leave them.

I have gotten into trouble with administration for making the statement, “Matthew Kelly has been publicly accused of being a womanizer.”

I am now in the process of getting my own name and account cleared with administration.

Folks, I am not here to make enemies. I would like to take this opportunity to demonstrate to everyone where I was coming from.

-1) I said Matthew Kelly was publicly accused of being a womanizer.

I did not say he IS or WAS indeed a womanizer, in fact.

Thus, I am in no legal or moral danger/trouble based upon the words I chose.

-2) I have both my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio–Matthew Kelly’s alma mater. Simply put, I am not a light-weight when it comes to discussions on Mr. Kelly.

-3) Regarding the evidence that Mr. Kelly has alleged private revelations, I have here in front of me a letter signed and dated by his own Bishop in Australia that proves beyond a shadow of doubt or question that Mr. Kelly alleges private revelations. Thankfully, by a miracle of the Most High, that letter has been preserved in electronic form on the Internet Way Back Archive Machine:

Matthew Kelly’s Bishop’s Letter

I will be happy to provide a copy of this letter via E-mail should anyone not be able to access it via the link above. StMi49531@aol.com

-4) Regarding the evidence that proves Mr. Kelly has been publicly accused of womanizing (see above distinction for clarification), please visit the following links:

Please hit CTRL + F and type in “Matthew Kelly”. You will see wherein the accusations have been made.

On a final note, please bear in mind that, and I say this with all charity, if you wish to attack me and say that I’m being an idiot, uncharitable, unfair, slanderous, or whatever else have you for supposedly “attacking” Matthew Kelly, I ask you to remember the example of the Legionaries and the atrocities its founder has wrought upon his followers.

People thought that man to be a living saint and did not question him whatsoever, precisely because of the cult of personality that surrounded him. This is proven by statements made after the revelations of the founder’s improprieties.

People warned against that man for years and we (yes, we) received the same insults that I fear may arise on this forum for speaking a word of caution about Matthew Kelly.

Remember, it is not uncharitable to warn people. It is uncharitable to have evil intent and that is not my deal here.

At no time in his writings or in his speaches Have I ever heard Matthew Kelly say that his message is from a vision. So it sounds as if he is obeying his bishop to me. 👍

Matt, I am a private investigator into claims of private revelations.

The fact that Mr. Kelly does not mention his alleged revelations is even more suspicious than I can possibly communicate to you.

The facts are undeniable–he started his “ministry” after receiving these alleged revelations. If he does not talk about that, or is open/upfront about it, as a training professional in the field, I have reason to question Mr. Kelly.

However, since Mr. Kelly is not here to defend himself, I will not here examine his motives.

Also, there was no order from his bishop to stop claiming revelations, so there is no question of obedience or disobedience for that matter. 👍

-1) I said Matthew Kelly was publicly accused of being a womanizer.
I’ll bet he is accuesed of a lot of things as am I or you. It is rumor spreading to insinuate such without proof. If you can’t see that then I can’t help you in your journey.
I did not say he IS or WAS indeed a womanizer, in fact.

You better re examine what constitutes moral trouble…

Acedemic name droping does not add to the article only to egos. Please, if you are going to invoke prestigious things try to honor them by your invoking and not lump them into your brand of rumor spreading.

;)delusions of grandure here…? Next in the format you should start using the words “we” and “our”

Remember, it is not uncharitable to warn people. It is uncharitable to have evil intent and that is not my deal here.warn away if with you on that but try to do it with ideas, points or facts, not innuendo and internet gossip.

Remember unity publising is not a credible source. Sounds like you have a vendetta here.🤷 To me it isn’t a big deal. But it is starting to become tiresome.

I’m out of this conversation, I don’t want to get suspended, and frankly it is just wierd. I hope this thread stays open though so there can be some discussion of my original post.

What administration? a school?
I thought the word “account” would have sufficed to mean THIS forum.
I’ll bet he is accuesed of a lot of things as am I or you. It is rumor spreading to insinuate such without proof. If you can’t see that then I can’t help you in your journey.
Your entire argument is predicated on that Unity Publishing is not credible. Yet you have not provided a shred of evidence yourself of such an accusation. Unity Publishing has done a lot over the years to warn people about false movements/apparitions in the Church and has, to date, been fairly accurate.

Lest you fall and perish by your own sword, I suggest that you back up your own accusation.
If not in the name of privacy how about the name of tact.
If I understand you correctly, I must encourage you to read (or re-read) the letter from the bishop. I think it was clear that he did not mind his letter being publicized. He knew to whom it was going.
delusions of grandure here…? Next in the format you should start using the words “we” and “our”
That remark was not about illusions of grandeur. It is about simple persecution and do not dismiss my point with such a sleight of hand. The point stands as it is.

How do we know that you did not look further into the post and saw the “we” later on and then made the above remark to make yourself look good?
You have no idea who is and isn’t a saint.
Tell that to Maciel’s followers before the revelations of his improprieties.

Perhaps, I agree that he has a wierd folloing but then again so does unity publishing.

Actually, I have found the opposite to be true regarding UP’s following, though I suppose you will just turn right back around and say that it is a case of the pot calling the kettle black or the blind leading the blind, so I’ll let the point rest.
warn away if with you on that but try to do it with ideas, points or facts, not innuendo and internet gossip.
I would like to see you explain your own position without sleights of hand and simple dismissal.

So anyway… Matthew came to our parish and gave several talks. He lost the teens, but the adults liked him. My wife thouhgt it was good but “light” and my buddy liked it too. the Bishop seemed to like it as well. I was reading his book again the other day and something caught me… He was talking about life being choices, (which for the most part I agree with) but in response to a question of “we didn’t Choose to be born.” He says that we may have had free will before we were born. this is not in line with Church teaching and I use it as an example of how he isn’t all that intellectual but more enigmatic. I am glad he came but the star of the show really was mark hart.

Hey Matt,
Maybe we were sitting beside each other…I was there this past weekend too! 😃 I had listened to several talks by Matthew Kelly from Lighthouse Catholic Media and enjoyed his insights and style. Our youth group used Mark Hart’s T3 Bible Timeline last year, so I was also familiar with him. When I heard they were both coming to our diocese, I could hardly believe my ears! In my mind, it was definitely a step in the right direction. 👍
I had pumped up my group quite a bit and am happy to report that the weekend was a smashing success for them and for me too. I did enjoy Matthew Kelly, but there wasn’t anything there that I hadn’t already heard on the above mentioned CD’s. I agree with you, the teens weren’t very fired up for him, but I think that had a lot to do with his AGE rather than his message or delivery. I was truly embarrassed that kids were walking out during his talk…it was only an hour for goodness sakes!
The books for everyone was a nice gesture. I already had the book, but started to re-read it last night. I totally missed the part you mentioned about choices…I’ll read that again tonight and see if I can detect what you see as questionable.🙂
I was greatly inspired by the weekend and I think the kids I brought were too. I think that God really spoke to some of them…my own son when up for the vocations call! 😃 This from the young man who has always insisted that he would NEVER be a priest!

ICYC was Awesome! Kudos to Lorrissa and Johnny for thier work. I am on the Core team with them and they are awsome. It was so Catholic! Congrats on your son. What parish were you from? I I loved the weekend and I hope you did too. Would love to get some feedback on a pm maybe.
PS the part in the book I was talking about was on page 4.

I don’t know that he is cultish at all. He came to my city last spring to speak after mass, and pretty much stuck to the Catholic strong points (confession, rosary, etc.). His focus seems to be on younger people who might not listen to an old decrepit priest (who is usually from another country and speaks with a thick accent, but I guess that would be a new topic for posting…), but could probably relate to his youthful positive demeanor. I did sort of wonder why he isn’t a priest himself, actually.
