We are probably more alike than you could tell from these posts.Matt, this may have begun with us looking at the phrase “Catholic lite” differently. I’ve heard this phrase used in three ways: to describe the Episcopalian “church” of the USA, to describe the Methodist confession, and to describe leftist, lukewarm, cafeteria Catholics, especially those who don’t acknowledge the primacy of the Pope and who pick and choose what teachings to believe.Nobody said the words catholic light exept you. everyone else refered to “light” as not spirutally deep. Especially posts 6 and 7. You have misunderstood this. Matthew Kelly is not “Catholic light” but he isn’t a “deep spirutally centered speaker” I’m sure even he would agree. You have misunderstood. It happens.
I perceive it as a gross injustice to label a speaker of Kelly’s caliber with that same label of “Catholic lite”. One has only to read what he says to know that he is the antithesis of Catholic lite. Of course I’m going to object to that appellation. Again, no one on this thread accused Matthew of what you say we did. But even if we did, it isn’t a “gross injustice” LOLsave that for something that it describes, no need to be overly dramatic.
No, I’ve probably never been to your parish unless it’s in Texas. Yes, I spent six years at a great parish. Now I’m back at a parish that I perceive as stagnant, and I’m unsure about becoming active there. Perhaps I know exactly what you’re talking about. But I find that mentally grouping others into a separate category of less-holy only hurt me in the past.I’m glad you have improved as a person. mentally grouping others is logical and correct as long as it is done with charity and honesty and facts. and experience. To not do so is ridiculous and can be very dangerous. At the least it is naieve. True though that grouping people can also be dangereous. I stand by my assesment of my parish as I know it well. I would actually apply that to many Catholics in the US also.
You said that your fellow parishioners were excited to get prominent Catholic speakers to visit. That is a very positive sign! I don’t understand the dismissive attitude toward them. It is a very good sign for your parish when people enjoy good Catholic speakers. It can take time for a parish to develop a deeper spirituality. Things move slow in the Catholic church (mostly).Yes I agree!!! I wish you had just posted this instead. It is a GOOD thing Mat Kelly came, He doesnt speak to me much and that is a valid opinion. I like to go deeper.
I mean, think of the most liberal church you know of. Would they be excited to get Matt Maher or any of the Catholic speakers previously mentioned? No, they would be openly hostile.]This is also very true. I am glad he came, again, it is a personal preference here that I don’t agree with.
