Maude: The Abortion Story

Norman Lear was a liberal propagandist who crafted some better-than-average situation comedies with strong main characters and decent scripts. The shows have not aged particularly well, in that they dealt with 1970s social issues that are mostly lost on the present generation.
I think he was the 70s version of Chuck Lorre. I’ve also noticed that a lot of sitcoms from the 70s and the 80s haven’t aged that well. The 90s seem to be doing a bit better I think but it’s still obvious that some of the technology used is “primitive”…lol

This is the only reference to Maude that I can think of for my generation:

A spin off from All in the Family. Groundbreaking shows. I never cared for Maude though.

Theme songs/ opening credit sequences are almost always my favorite parts of all TV shows.
Especially vintage shows, the theme songs were better then.

I totally agree! I think that the theme songs for shows in the 70s and 80s were so effective. Do shows even have theme songs now? Now I’m going to be on a trip down memory lane watching theme songs from old shows. Three’s Company ( which I was not allowed to watch), Greatest American Hero, The Jeffersons… this will be so much fun.

My personal favorite theme song was “Welcome Back, Kotter” (which was also a huge worldwide hit so it was lots of people’s favorite). Some TV shows nowadays still have great theme songs. The Sopranos theme song is the most recent one that really grabbed me.

What blows my mind is that Maude could still be young enough to get pregnant… she was supposed to be about 47 years old IIRC, but she seemed a lot older to me at the time. Archie and Edith Bunker were only about 50-ish as well (there were All in the Family episodes about Edith going through menopause). Which means they were all younger than I am now…

Yeah, it blows my mind that Maude was only supposed to be in her 40s because she looks quite old in the sitcom with the gray hair and such. In those days, 40 was considered old, sort of like 50 or 55 is now.

Wow, am I the only one that thought of Hillary Clinton when “Maude” opened the door? The hair, the clothes, the attitude. ☺️

Not the few network shows I’ve seen, generally not. They tend to be more like a cold open with fleeting titles around the bottom of the screen. Probably has something to do with being able to sell that time for commercials versus having an artful, easily remembered beginning and ending of the show.

I watch very, very little new-production network or cable television. I pretty much go with either news, documentaries, or reruns of beloved old shows.

Breaking Bad was my one exception, and what an exception it was! None better, never ever. 😎
